DP and I are thinking of escaping to southern France for the week ( Go on, all adopt your faces ) in a couple of weeks.. i'll be roughly 15-16 weeks when we go. It's okay to fly then isn't it? I mean I know it is.. but Google has been my worst enemy again and has spouted a load of crap about cosmic radiation and DVT

I'm being silly, aren't I? There really is no need for me to force DP into spending a whole day faffing about on trains when we could be there in 2 hours by plane right?

I flew to Oz at 4 mths with no problems. You are slightly ore at risk of DVT when pg, but if the flight is only 2 hours I wouldn't have thought that to be an issue. Drink lots (water of course!) and exercise your legs/ankles several times during the flight to reduce the possibilty. I wore flight sox which are supposed to help, but I was in teh air for about 24 hours!!

Hi there,

I flew long-ish haul (up to 8 hours) five times throughout the pregnancy - at 2, 6, 12, 20 and 28 weeks respectively. Although this was out of necessity, because of where I was living in Africa, and I would obviously prefer to have flown less, the flights went smoothly, and airline crew were very kind to me. I flew business class the last couple of times, so had flat bed and more room to move around, but a 1 to 2 hour flight to France is nothing - you'll be fine.

Wear flight socks, walk around the plane lots, drink lots of water, let DP carry all your bags, get extra rest the days before and after travel, etc etc etc... And enjoy a well-deserved holiday!

Needless to say, at 35 weeks I'm now refusing any journey longer than five minutes.

Bloody hell I am being stupid then 24 hours Vs 2 hours.. !

I flew at about 20 weeks and it was great - I was clearly pregnant and got to board first and got an upgrade!

CeceliaAhern · 02/01/2009 11:34

Yes- I have flew to France at about 13 weeks. I was fine. So fine I flew back home again . Have fun!

CeceliaAhern · 02/01/2009 11:35

Oh my God

I flew or

I have flown

I honestly did not make that mistake- was in 2 minds which way to put it.

skiingone · 02/01/2009 11:35

I have flown about 8 times time since the beginning of the pregnancy and ond of the flights was to OZ. Last time just recently at about 25 weeks. It's fine especially for shorter flights - don't even need the socks. Just drink water and try to move around from time to time. No need to worry about radiation, the levels are extremely low and would not affect you or the baby.

Giddykeeper - .. might shove some padding under my top in that case... or just not hold it all in

I went to spain at 17weeks and was fine

SheWillBeLoved · 02/01/2009 11:47

Thanks for the reassurance ladies I didn't really wanna spend a whole day on trains/ferrys/coaches but my obsession with making sure beany sticks to me this time got the better of me!

I flew twice every other weekend from conception until I was about 6 months.

You will be fine. Worst thing was being regularly searched at security while I was bursting out of my clothes and having buttons undone everywhere while I was in the looking-fat-not-pregnant phase.

SheWillBeLoved · 02/01/2009 11:52

LOL arfishy... bollocks, exactly where I am! The shame of them spotting the bobble holding my jeans up with my knickers peeking through the zip gap Think i'll squeeze a shopping trip in before we go!

go for the flight - I flew 6 times in this pregnancy and took an international train and a ferry.

The flights were absolutely fine (some long haul, some short), keep hydrated and wear your teds and you'll be fine.

TBH I woulndt do the ferry/train option again whilst pregnant - the vibrations on the ferry were very very stong and made me feel very uneasy, all the seats were taken and drunks kept bumping into me, people pushed and shoved so much on the stairs that I nearly fell down them.

Take the plane option and enjoy your hol x

We flew to Hong Kong last year when I was 15 weeks pregnant. It was 11 hours to Beijing then 3 to Hong Kong. I was sick on every flight it was awful.

I would recommend taking travel sickness bands and any tablets that are safe just in case. Normally I am fine on flights but when pregnant it really didnt agree with me.

For such a short flight and no jet lag you should be fine x

ClausImWorthIt · 02/01/2009 12:13

The only time I have been seasick or had pregnancy nausea was when travelling on a ferry whilst in the early stages of pregnancy.

The biggest hardship of flying in the early days was not being allowed the glass of champagne offered to business class passengers - which also alerted my colleagues to my pregnancy!

fuzzywuzzy · 02/01/2009 12:18

I flew in my first trimester with dd2, take off and landing was uncomfortable but apart from that I was fine. I'm talking 9 hour flight here too!!!

If you feel OK in yourself, and speak to your GP if your really worried, you should be fine, ask to sit next to the doors or at the bulkhead as you'll have extra space for stretching your legs out that way.

Kalikaroo · 02/01/2009 13:27

I went on 4 hr flight at 6 weeks and just got back from a 4 hr flight at 26 weeks. Perfectly ok to fly at 16 weeks. Airlines have their own regulations about pregnancy and flying, but most of that only applies over 30 weeks.

My midwife told me to wear flight socks though, and make sure you walk around and drink plenty of water or juice.

Enjoy your holiday!

monkeybumsmum · 02/01/2009 13:45

I live abroad so regularly flew back to UK when expecting ds - from 5 weeks right until I couldn't fly any more at 30+ wks. I had no problems at all.

The only thing I did differently was to choose not to go through the security scan machines (can't remember proper name ). They say it's okay but I didn't want to risk it. Also as I started to show more I got whisked past queues of people at security/boarding - it was great . I even got dh to go and tell them I was pg when it wasn't obvious, and then we escaped queues too .

Have a lovely holiday you lucky thing, hope the weather's good for you! I was in Cannes a few years ago in early Feb, and it was T-shirt weather. Hope you're as lucky!

xxhunnyxx · 02/01/2009 17:01

I flew at about 5-6 weeks (before I knew I was pg) and also at about 8 weeks. I had no problems.
Google sometimes really does do more harm than good! xx

katie789 · 02/01/2009 17:28

This is EXTREMELY rare (I'd love to know what the actual odds are), but interesting story about a woman giving birth while flying - mum and baby are both fine by the way, and she was almost full term anyway.

Just posting it out of interest - please don't let it put you off flying; unless you are 38 weeks or more!

NB, I've heard before from my DH and other friends who work in both immigration and the airline business that this is a not uncommon way for people to get a western passport and nationality for their children, although obviously I've no idea if that's true for this particular case.

katie789 · 02/01/2009 17:30

Meant to add, my friend who works for Virgin Atlantic says any baby born during a flight is entitled to a lifetime's free flights with them!

1stMrsF · 04/01/2009 18:56

The radiation could only potentially be a risk if you fly a lot e.g. you are cabin crew, which is why they get grounded when they are pg. A short flight to France will be fine. I went to Cyprus at about the same point in my pg and the one thing I would say is that travelling was horrid, so whatever gets you there fastest is best! I was still sick though, so hopefully you will not be and you'll be fine. Take lots of water as I think you must dehydrate faster - I was very thirsty - and also carry snacks and/or eat before; I didn't fancy what the airline was serving but was still at that stage where I was eating almost constantly in order to overcome the nausea.

Have a wonderful holiday - it's a great time to go whilst you still look and feel relatively not pregnant - build up some lovely memories for you and DP before the baby comes
