Hi

Just been to the midwife, who mentioned the Health in Pregnancy Grant, but didn't really have many details. Its for anyone with a baby born from April 09 (im due on 1st!) and is for £190, but thats all she knew.

Does anyone out there know any further details (like how to claim?!)

Damn, I wish I'd never seen this thread! Out by 3 weeks grrr

mogwai · 03/01/2009 11:54

I'm "obsessed by fruit and veg" because that is what the government says the grant is for....to "contribute towards healthy eating in the latter weeks of pregnancy as this has been shown to benefit the baby's health".

Or words to that effect.

"The Health in Pregnancy Grant will be introduced from April 2009. The grant will provide pregnant women with financial support, alongside important advice from a Health Professional. This will help them to invest in their individual needs during pregnancy, whilst giving them flexibility to choose how they budget and where they spend this money. It will be available to every woman from the 25th week of pregnancy, once they have had the appropriate health advice from a health professional such as their midwife."

Oh I definitely read a whole load of stuff about the importance of adequate nutrition in the final weeks and how it affects the baby's health.

And this was the reason given by our friend who is a labour MP. He truly believes it will be spent on apples.

But then he refuses to believe me about the big tellies!

BoffinMum · 03/01/2009 20:12

Well I haven't even got my hands on the money yet, but I just went to Tesco and bought loads of healthy stuff as a result of finding out about the grant, because I hadn't realised it mattered so much to eat well at the end of pg, I thought it was just at the beginning when the foetus was being formed. And I am a keen cook who has had 3 kids already, but I had started to eat rubbish out of pg laziness. So perhaps it will inspire people to make a bit of an effort, if the money comes with a bit of a talk from the mw.

Is the fruit and veg not a different one?
I dont know im just asking.... When i saw midwife last wk there were pictures on wall of fruits and was about some grant but not the health in pregnancy...

healthy start vouchers

"You may be able to get vouchers worth £3.00 each that can be spent on milk, fresh fruit and vegetables or infant formula.

Pregnant women and children over one and under four years old get one voucher a week. Children under one year old get two vouchers a week.

You can also get free vitamin supplements. They're usually available from NHS clinics and health centres but your midwife or health visitor will be able to advise on local arrangements."

mogwai · 04/01/2009 11:38

The Blonde, you are determined to get the last word, I applaud your efforts.

But the MP insists this is what the grant was designed for. And he's in the government.

He's a fool, mind you. We don't usually discuss politics as he knows my nickname is Thatcher

brettgirl2 · 04/01/2009 11:40

You don't want to believe anything MPs tell you

TheBlonde · 04/01/2009 12:44

Not sure why you think I was determined to get the last word - it was my first post on this thread

perhaps this will be the last word

BoffinMum · 04/01/2009 12:55

Government is very tired and has lost its way IMO. They are mucking about.

1stMrsF · 04/01/2009 18:33

I've read as much as I can find on this and I do agree with a lot of what has been said so far - i.e. will the money really be used for what it is intended, to keep mum and baby healthy. However, what you spend the money on is not the only thing contributing to health in pregnancy; in order to claim you must have been seen regularly by a health care professional throughout your pregnancy and your midwife must sign the claim form - therefore, it is an incentive for every mum to make sure she gets the proper care throughout pregnancy and that may well mean good nutritional advice that may have been lacking otherwise.

thunder2006 · 05/01/2009 18:43

Is this means tested at all?

aidansyummymummy · 05/01/2009 18:57

no not at all. I've been sharing the good new with all my pregnant work chums!

Jane1980 · 15/01/2009 10:48

Hello, someone just told me about this grant, frustratingly I'm due 31 March, 6 days before you can claim - how useful, kinda wish I didn't know about it - lol! Will def let others know so at least they can benefit!
