Baby sling - which one?

Am due in March and just starting to get various things in for the babe (first) and think I would like to try a sling as well as using a pram (DH especially likes this idea).

So, have done a search on Google and Ebay and the choice is befuddling.

Would love to get the sage MN massive's input.

Firstly: Is it worth getting one of those big sporty things like a MacPac Possum? DH likes his sporty gear and is being swayed by the back-pack looks of it and we're both outdoorsy people, so would we benefit from one of these? Quite pricey it seems.. on first search.

Secondly: Do people have a preference over the material wrap type slings vs. Baby Bjorn slings, and if so, which one is better?

If you say the material type ones, what brands should I be looking at? There appears to be millions of different options.

Think that's it -- all advice gratefully appreciated.

there are 2 tricot slens and a moby left. they are both stretchy and great for 1st timers and newborns.

Another vote for the moby wrap, or a hugabub (the moby is cheaper but does the same job imo). My lo is 6 months and 17lb and I'm still using it. It's super-comfortable, and I have a bad back yet can still use it with no probs. I also have a mei tei but to me the moby feels cosier for a young baby.

I recently bought a pouch sling (coorie fleece) for ease of use when I just need to pick my lo up quickly but won't need to carry him very long in it. Finding it great

OH GOD! There's just so much choice and everyone's got a different opinion! Argh!

I think I want to go to one of these sling meets and try them all out. How can I find one?

Not sure if I am hoi or polloi - but tho' the bigmama slings are nice ... they are a bit girly for my bloke. I wanted something he'd be willing to be seen in public using.

We had a Bushbaby cocoon and hiked in it and I found it very good, Baby was always very comfortable and well supported and it was comfortable for us too - and easy to put on. We now use a Bushbaby backpack and again have been very pleased with it's comfort etc. We used the cocoon well passed 6 months though - dd3 was not very heavy and I loved the convenience of it.
