Mulled whine - what are you missing?

I am onto dc2 but last one was born at beginning of december in time for me to enjoy Christmas food & wine. I dont really remember missing stuff too much that I had to give up when preg. But with christmas here I am feeling it this time particularly when surrounded by the heady aroma of mulled wine. In the past I have managed to get a spiced fruit cordial (the company with the conical green bottles do a nice one) which made a good replacement when driving but this year cant find any. Also we usually have scrambled eggs & smoked salmon for christmas day brunch before doing the rounds. No posh cheeses. No pate - not even veggie.Got to way up my chocolate intake on the caffine front so can still have a cuppa. At least they have changed their minds about peanuts (only need to give up if history of allergies in family). Anyone else feeling that they are missing out?

ahhh relax a bit, one glass of mulled wine will be fine.
and what's wrong with eggs and salmon????? i am addicted to both atm...

i thought pate was because of liver or something???
oh, i dunno, i just eat what I like tbh. really, the odd bit here or there isnt going to hurt you

nope, I've had mulled wine this pm, very nice it was too

also agree with TIS, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs are fine

nct73 · 26/12/2008 19:59

I was told no smoked salmon by gp as not exactly cooked. Eggs are fine fully cooked. He said no meat or even vegetarian pâté as can contain the bacteria listeria. Also no prepacked washed salads. I have had 1 glass of mulled wine but would have liked MORE. I keep being offered it everywhere & the smell is just divine.

Other things getting to me at Christmas/end of year are stirring key changes & montages. I have to fight back the tears. It's ridiculous. Generally going quite well health wise, no pains, no vomiting, just crying at stupid things .

obvious point but smoked salmon has been smoked to preserve it ie, kill bacteria

here's the NHS advice anyway NHS Direct

Definately missing out on the things i love. Blue Cheese and Pate, and as we went out for Xmas Dinner this year i really wanted my sisters boyfriends Field Mushroom topped with oozing Goats Cheese but opted for the Goose Breast just instead....

Why not have some Modern Wassail?

It's non-alcoholic and very naice:

500 ml orange juice
250 ml apple juice
250 ml cranberry juice drink (like Ocean spray)
3 tablespoons of lemon juice
One quarter teaspoon each of ground ginger, ground cloves, allspice and ground cinnamon

Put all ingredients into a large saucepan - I use my crueset - and heat gently, do not boil. I use a spice bag and whip it out before ladling the wassail into tumblers.

Yum

You can eat posh cheeses - just not blue cheeses and mould ripened soft cheeses (ie brie and camembert - which I think are v. overrated anyway)

I personally think the peanut thing is just an experiment - there is no evidence as far as I am aware that there is any benefit to avoidance regardless of whether anyone has allergies or not. This was not mentioned to me by GP or MW so I will assume they think it is un inimportant.

Get decaff coffee and you can trough as much choccie as you like

dinny · 27/12/2008 17:41

lol and brie and camembert being overrated - surely you don't mean that??????

Smoked salmon in scrambled eggs is absolutely fine. A.) the salmon is smoked and b) it will be hot! Lunch meat is also okay if its hot!

I miss Pate, as my family scarfed it down around me the past few days!

brettgirl2 · 27/12/2008 17:55

Haha I hope nobody French reads this site, but the one I miss is stilton!

I don't entirely understand the pate one (I thought it was because of Listeria), by brother made pate on Xmas day and it had been in the oven all afternoon - so it couldn't be a listeria risk surely? My uncle had Listeria from pate in a restaurant. I didn't actually have any though because it was also liver!

Hawkmoth · 29/12/2008 16:43

Liver Pate is because of Vitamin A, others because of Listeria. You'd be in medical journals if you got Listeria!

I had a small amount of farmhouse pate on Xmas day, half a glass of wine, and a large amount of Smoked Salmon mousse!

Caffeine not bothered about, can't even kiss my OH if he's been drinking coffee, and I used to have ten cups a day!
