I think anything like that will have been processed to exhaustion so should be fine - but I am no expert, it is a while since I was pg for te first time! (the subsequent pgs were far less strict in my case!)

DontCallMeSantaBaby · 20/12/2008 23:08

Given that you're not supposed to feed raw eggs to children either, there's no way that those products contain any 'dangerous' form of raw egg.

DreamingOfMincePiesInAustria · 20/12/2008 23:11

I think you'll be absolutely fine, could just eat a Tunnocks mmmmmm

niamh29 · 20/12/2008 23:11

The problem with raw eggs is the risk of salmonella poisoning but its only a small risk and really its very hard to cut everything out, so I would avoid what you can and don't stress too much about it.

I just found out today i'm pregnant with number 2, don't know now if I should be carrying around my 2 and 1/2 year old, its very hard to explain to her that I can't pick her up!

NCRedBreastedBirdy · 20/12/2008 23:28

Niamh, you should be fine, there is more risk to your back than your baby

Happyathome, the best advice I got (again I am not an expert) was that te major risks come from things you are not usually exposed to, ie brie, if you have never eaten it before, could be very dangerous however if you have it every day for lunch then you are likley to be fine.

As I said, the food you listed are all processed. Even Hellmans Mayo is fine as it is processed egg they use - because of the risk to pg women. It is unprocessed egg not egg altogether that is the problem.

thanks everyone...off to eat a mars bar you have all been so reassuring.Am a bit nervous about eggs,as DD has egg allergy and i read somewhere that should be ok for me to have in pregnancy, but allergy risk in baby may be reduced if not eaten when breastfeeding.all so confusing though...but yes it was poisoning that mainly worried me.i'm a second timer too,so should be more relaxed.just a born worrier.
appreciate your support.have a merry christmas

If your child has an allergy then it is perfectly natural to have a heightened sense of concern so you are not being at all p2b!

I am a bit beyond 2 pgs now so am so relaxed as to be horizontal

I think you need to ask yourself if you have ever known anyone to be ill on them.

Rare beef - yes, my dad (although it was mince)
Pate - yes, uncle
Cheese - yes, FIL
Raw eggs - no, in fact as a child ate cake mixture, but have heard second hand people being ill, so will accept
Bagged salad - an interesting one, but have long suspected the often musty smell is not healthy (and as a result probably won't take up again after pg either!)

Milky way, hellman's mayonnaise, processed cheesecake?????

I also am yet to be convinced about avoidance being good for allergies. Perhaps giving into peanut butter cravings and eating it 3 times a day may have an effect, but to me logic says that avoidance is just as likely to lead to allergy - if then the child's immune system when first exposed sees it as 'foreign' then it produces antibodies?

happyathome · 21/12/2008 14:00

thanks NCred and brettgirl.it is confusing, but i agree with you brettgirl...there is not enough evidence one way or the other is there

avoid pate as the high levels of Vitamin A can affect developing babies sight.

happyathome · 21/12/2008 23:17

thanks for info metoo...don't eat any of the 'to avoid' list anyway.fortunately don't like pate.
had more mars products today though, getting so fed up,i am leaning a little more horizontally....anxiety doesn't pay does it?!

to be honest I never even thought of not eating certain choc bars...mmmm I really fancy a mars right now!

As for peanuts, my midwife said they were fine in moderation - wouldn't advise anyone to go shovelling them in, but that's what she said!

I have eaten tonnes of cheese, although not the ones they tell you to specifically avoid. And I have eaten bagged salad, just given it an extra wash first.
