'Low protein, high hormones': blood test back and recommended amnio - but what does this mean?

I'm 18 weeks pg and I've been recommended to go for an amnio because my blood has shown '0.98 protein' and '2.46 hormones'. Loads of worries and thoughts about the amnio are going around my head right now but I can't really make out the statistics I've been given. Can anyone help me understand what this protein/hormone is? I just feel I'd be better placed to make a decision if I knew.

Thanks.

I had something like this with ds1, was told that my blood test was high risk and offered amnio. there should be a pre-natal counsellor that can put thing in a better way for you to understand and I would ask about this. I was told there was something like 1 in 186 chance that ds would have down syndrome and decided against amnio.

you need a figure, a statistic, as sing song says.

I can't believe they've given nothing for you to go on.

What problem are they checking for?

You don't have blood test results? You need to get that paper that tells you levels of all three markers, AND the 1/xxx risk of Down Syndrome.

"Protein" is AFP (alpha feto-protein) and "hormones" is either BhCG or UE3.
