Hi

Ds2 was breech at 36 weeks and turned shortly after.

I think they only like doing caesareans at 39+ weeks if there's no other medical reason for one but that may vary depending on the consultant?

Is it your first baby? The more babies you've had the more chance there is she'll turn by herself.

They may well suggest an ECV (where they attempt to turn the baby manually from outside) before they go to a CS, although that will depend on how she's lying and whether they can see the cord, etc - some babies have short cords or get tangled such that trying to turn them could cause major problems.

My DD was breech, and was born as such at home with two lovely IMs. I found experienced IMs that were supportive of breech homebirth without too much difficulty (the NHS would have given me a CS), but a breech presentation is a bit different to a fully transverse lie and I suspect most MWs would agree that a CS is the best way forward if the baby can't/won't turn.

When you'd be booked in would depend on your hospital's policy and schedule - some only do elective CS on given days, etc. That said, I'm guessing they'd lean more towards 39 than 38 weeks as well - they'd have had me in at about 39 weeks if I hadn't opted out of NHS care.

Fingers crossed for you and try not to stress too much.

DS was transverse. Unless LO turns you will have a CS. In our area, they keep you in hospital from 37w in case you go into labour (which is dangerous because of the possibility of cord prolapse) but that varies from area to area. Then do a cs at 39w/40w if there are no other problems which indicate earlier delivery.

Your LO may well turn, but in my case DS had reasons not to (placenta was v. low and in the way) so he never really engaged even though he tried to turn. Apparently, once you've had transverse babies, the next ones are less likely to engage (because it's comfortable like that) - I met a woman in hospital who was on her fourth.

Good luck.

My second baby was transverse and was delivered by emergency c section, however there were other factors, the most significant being I had gone into early labour at 36 weeks, was bleeding slightly and had had a previous emergency section. Why her position was'nt detected at ante natal checks I'm not sure though with hindsight I do remember a student midwife had trouble finding her head and was basically told by the main midwife where it ought to be. Third baby was elective section at 38 weeks, ironically she was the only one to be in the right position and had began to engage. Elective section lovely though, first working day after Christmas so the unit was quiet and every one seemed relaxed and calm and I walked down to theatre as was not in labour. Mince pie and cup of tea in recovery afterwards !

Ought to have mentioned that although baby was early at 36 weeks she was absolutely fine and we were still home after 3 days

cheers

she will be my 2nd dd

hope they dont keep me in hosp from 37 weeks as that is what i am on xmas day.
i am not too worried as birth with dd1 was horrendous and had 2nd degree nearly 3rd degree tear.

Babies turn generally during the last 2-3 weeks - but remember that the 'due date' isn't an exact science and can be a week or two either way.

Keep relaxed, baby will turn when ready. I can't remember the exact figures but breeches are not as common as you'd think (I thin it's 3-4% on delivery day).

ECV works OK but it is not unusual for the baby to flip back afterwards (obviously not ready to turn yet!).

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

mine is transverse (sideways) which is even less common then breech.
not too worried about having a csection as i tore badly with dd1. me and dh dont want to have ecv.

I had a c-section with my DD as she was transverse and it was FINE.(I had some other factors which made it not so fine but that's another story) SOoo if it does go that way, try not to worry about it.

And don't worry too much baout Christmas either. I was in hospital on New Year's Eve waiting to have DD last year. I watched all the fireworks from the window and even though it was a little lonely, I felt so emotional that this was going to be DD's year! She arrived, unexpectedly in the end, the next day. It actually made it all kind of special. I like the idea of New Year much more now than I did before!

eandh · 19/12/2008 09:29

dd1 was breech had an ECV at 37 weeks and she flipped straight back into breech position, had elective section at 39+3

dd2 was transverse, but to coplicate matters also had bleeding throughout whole pregnancy, they didnt attempt ecv and booked me in for elective section at 38+4 (ideally they would have done around 39 weeks but because of the unexplained bleeds it was decided to bring it forward, in fcat it was nearly bought forward to new years day at one point but she hung on till 5th jan and she'll be 2 in a few weeks!)

Pantofino · 19/12/2008 09:34

With transverse dd, they kept me in hospital from 37 weeks and I had a CS planned at 39 weeks. (reason as explained by Chaotica) When the doctor came to examine that morning dd had gone head down and they sent me home. I wish I had insisted that they went ahead, as I ended up being induced/em cs two week's later. Dd's head never engaged.

does anyone know the chances of her turning.

Changes are good that baby will turn. If you are stressed it doen't help. Try to do some relaxation, swimming... whatever relaxes you. This will relax the muscles in the tummy and give a little more room for baby to turn.
