Apologies if TMI but this last week it's just getting worse and worse.. I've had quite bad heartburn all the way through now at 30+ but now I've started being sick in my mouth if I cough and waking at about 3 am as the build up of acid is so painful it's easier for me to brush my teeth, thus making me sick and then I can go back to bed.. I'm just shattered from being up all night..

Gaviscon makes me hurl as soon as I take it.. (thus getting rid of excess acid for short while).. Tried milk before bed, during the night, sparkling water... This is my second pgncy and DS 2y4m I'm sure it wasn't this bad last time..
Any help advice greatly appreciated

I've had really bad heartburn this time, not been sick with it but keeps me awake, Gaviscon no help at all. Had a moan to my doc and she gave me a prescription for Ranitidine, tablets you take twice a day (they're routinely given before a section etc to make sure you don't bring up any acid/bile during surgery). Absolutely brilliant! I take one after breakfast and one an hour or so before bed and they've made a real difference

Yes, go to the doctor - you can have rinitidine or omeprazole (which is more effective than rinitidine) during pg. Gaviscon is crap - I find it just dilutes the acid and makes it slosh around more. It's quite high in salt I think too so I'm not even convinced its safer, particularly in the large quantities people seem to swig it down in.

Definately - gets some ranitadine prescribed - you'll be a different woman 30 mins after taking the first tablet!

The only thing that stopped (or calmed) this for me was freezing cold strawberry yazoo!

My midwife told me that I wasn't allowed ranitidene unless desperate I am drinking a bottle of Gaviscon a week. Off to doctors ASAP to get ranitadene.

I'm off to the walk in centre now!!Of course can't get docs appointment..

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!!

It was worse for me in terms of sickness etc coming from the acid in my first pregnancy - I hated Gaviscon though I did try it in tablet form which was more bearable than the liquid. Difficult on horribly cold days (ds1 was a spring baby whereas I'm due next month this time) but I also find ice cold substances help, mainly cola ice pops. Hope the other suggested stuff helps.

I really think that a lot of midwives either haven't got a clue or actually enjoy making sure that pregnancy discomforts are as uncomfortable as possible. Mine really made me panic about Omeprazole because I was taking it when I got pregnant (I had discussed with doctor - I have constant reflux all the time, not just when pg) so I immediately booked an appointment with another doctor who looked at me in disbelief about her not knowing what the normal treatments were for heartburn in pg. Omeprazole is also much better than rinitidine which doesn't do much for me to be honest.
