Am 39w. Really, really painful SPD. It's got so bad that I can't sleep for more than a few minutes at a time...as well as the searing pain beteen my legs, my lower back is frozen in pain, and both hips are excrutiatingly sore...I need crutches or a wheelchair but neither are in the least bit practical.

I have an appt on Friday morning - can I demand an induction? At last check last week, I was 3cm dilated - been having cervix pains so assume I could be further on by now. I'm finding it really hard getting anyone to take me seriously here (in USA) with regards to how much agony I'm in.

I'm also worried that this baby is enormous! I feel terrible. I just want this all over. I've already been refused a CS. My mum and MIL arrive from UK today so at least Ill have some help....feel like going up to L&D and lying, saying I'm leaking or something, just to get things started. WWYD?

They will know if you are leaking, they will swab to see if it's amniotic fluid.

Can you try to live in very warm baths for a while?

Neeerly3 · 17/12/2008 15:16

do u have access to a TENS machone perhaps?

Lulumama · 17/12/2008 15:19

you can ask for an induction of labour, whether you get one or not is another story. you need to be calm and rational and try to set out exactly how much pain you are in and that you are unable to tolerate it

you also need to find out, ASAP, about different pain relief for SPD. can you use a TENS machine for any of your pain

also, crutches and a wheelchair might not be practical, but they can help hugely.

no point lying, about leaking or pains, as they can easily be checked, just tell the truth and see what happens.

haave you tried physio?

kitkat9 · 17/12/2008 15:20

got 2 dc's so can have baths every day but can't live in them! don't hae a TENS machine...

have been taking co-codamol every now and then, and co-drydamol very occasionally but they really do nothing to help so what's the point? And then I just get worried that I'm damaging the baby with my painkillers...

oh this is a fricking nightmare. I've never been so miserable.

tens machine might help, does wonder for my back ache.
demand an induction, tell them ur not leaving till u get one or the other (CS or induction) as you cant walk out the room.

Lulumama · 17/12/2008 15:28

hire or buy an obstetric TENS machine today

candyy · 17/12/2008 15:39

Go to your doctor and say you're at your wits end and want to be induced.

A girl i was in hospital with was being induced two weeks before her due date, so she didn't miss her sisters wedding, so I would hope you have a much stronger case.

Lulumama · 17/12/2008 15:42

induction, if you are not 'ripe' , could take many days. hopefully not, but it could be a while to get you going, and for long periods, you are going to be confined to a bed, which is painful , and it could be a painful process in itself...

candyy · 17/12/2008 15:57

Yes, to be honest I was induced and it was tough going, in terms of length to get started and having no privacy on a maternity ward. Though should be quicker though if it's baby no 2 or 3.

MKG · 17/12/2008 16:38

kitkat-You can demand an induction if you want one. And at 39 weeks you'll probably get it.

Just to let you know generally once you start an induction with a drip here you aren't allowed to eat anything until the baby is born. When I was induced I was told if it took 3 days then I would eat in 3 days.
If you are induced you will be monitored continuously so ask for a walking monitor to give you more mobility.

You would have to ask your practitioner about a TENS machine as they aren't a generally used thing here.

Out of curiousity why were you refused a C-section.

MKG · 17/12/2008 16:40

MKG--meant to add about the eating if they tell you, before you go in, eat like you're eating for an army.

kitkat9 · 17/12/2008 18:51

MKG - was refused a CS as there was apparently 'no medical reason' to give me one... like my pain isn't enough? Are you in the US too? You sund like you have experience?

It's my 3rd baby - am already dilated at least 3cm and feeling lots of downward pressure and sharp pains so could be more than 3cm by now.

I was induced with dd (2nd pg) as I had a hindwater leak but no contractions at 37 + 5..found it fine - from taking the tablet to going into proper labour was about 7/8 hours I think? I would rather be in hospital so I can have an epidural as soon as I need one

  • tbh cannot wait for an epidural as ALL the pain will go away!

pain is not really a medical reason though.. i hate to sound unkind, but SPD is something that can be par for the course in pregnancy. delivery usually resolves the problem.

it sounds as though you are well on your way though and that you might well go naturally very soon, am sure it is worth discussing induction though, can;t hurt to ask.

c.s brings its own complications as does an induction before you are ready

i know it is hard to beleive, but the caregivers are really thinking of the long term what is best for you and your baby

kitkat9 · 17/12/2008 20:08

I know Lulumama...and in my mor lucid moments I can reason with myself that it'll all be over soon...

it's just when I'm literally screaming in agony because I tried to do something simple like bend down...or walk...that I wonder when this hell will end...

Lulumama · 17/12/2008 20:15

i hope it goes well when it does happen

MKG · 17/12/2008 21:24

I am in the US too. I live in NJ.

I agree with lulumama it sounds like you are on your way. Although a friend of mine was 4 cm for a month before she went into labor.

You could go to L&D if it gets to be too bad. Odds are they'll put you in triage for a bit and send you home. If you're lucky, they may keep you, break your waters, and take it from there.

Hopefully having your mom and MIL there will take the load off you and you will feel better about everything.

Take care of yourself and I hope you go into labor soon.

Bunkups33 · 18/12/2008 00:06

Sounds terrible. Will you be able to completely rest when mum and MIL arrive? Does that help?

My very limited experience of obstetric care in US is that they are much more ready to intervene than in UK. If you are 39 weeks and 4cm they may well start you off.

Where in US are you btw?
