Is this SPD and any suggestions to make it better?

I am 25 wks and have been having slight stiffness in left bum cheek for a few weeks. Monday it felt a bit stiffer but then Monday night I rolled over in bed and was in agony! Tried getting up but no better. finally managed to get back into bed on right side and settled down a bit. Went to hospital yesterday and told prob muscular./skeletal pain. Prescribed paracetamol and bed rest. Pain is just at point of left bum cheek at bony area kind of top of crack (sorry ). I could really do with being able to work for next two days but have long walk / train commute to deal with. Once friday past I am off for a lovely 2.5weeks.
Any advice ??

SPD = symphysis pubis dysfunction which means a problem with the joint at the front of the pelvis.

What you're describing sounds more like an SI (sacro iliac) joint problem which is where your sacrum (the lowermost part of your spine)meets the pelvis.

I would keep moving around gently and get onto your midwife to request a physio referral asap.

Not sure myself but VirginBoffinMum is a fab person to ask (v knowlegeable) i will try and send her your way xx

Iwish - SPD can affect any part of the pelvis, in fact they are now starting to call it pelvic girdle pain. This can indeed affect the sacro-illiac joint as the ligaments in the whole area over-soften, but I agree it could just be that Whitey has put her back out.

Whiteybaby - the key is to be ladylike in all things, eg, get into the car by sitting on the seat and carefully swining your legs in together. It really is worthwhile seeing a chiroprator and getting the joint manipulated.

Also worth trying to see a physio (talk to your GP or midwife).

I have suffered with a dodgy back for years and have SPD so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

In bed, stick a pillow between your knees and one under your bump.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/12/2008 12:07

Well I never LilRedWG! I thought they were 2 separate things and that I was just unfortunate enough to suffer from both.

DS2 is now 6 months old and I'm still stuggling with symphysis pubis and SI joint pain and have a physio appointment for 8th Jan - now I'm more than 6 months post natal I have to be seen by the "normal" physios rather than the obs and gynae ones!

Agree though that a pillow between your knees at night is great, as are slinky pj's that help you to slide your bum over the sheets rather than have to lift it!

Mine started as back pain, that's the only reason I know. LOL. It sucks and I hate it. Hope you are feeling better soon.

See a chiroprator too - seriously. I went in on crutches and walked out carrying them! news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2499115.stm article inspired me to go and it worked wonders.

LilRedWG · 17/12/2008 12:13

Damn - try again! This article.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/12/2008 12:17

WOW!

I'll see how it goes with physio (because it's free!) but keep that in mind too.

Sorry for highjacking this thread btw)

Whiteybaby · 17/12/2008 12:21

thanks all for your responses. I have the slinky pj's and have been trying the pillow between knees. Just feeling miserable with it and keen to try anything that might help. sounds like gentle moving might be ok though. Mostly, once i get going its not quite so bad!!
