Anyone had a 3D/4D scan

What was it like? Would you recommend the experience. I live in Hertfordshire and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of a private company who does 3D/4D scans.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

In my part of Scotland you don't get routine scan at 20wks - the only scan in your pregnancy is at 12 wks if your classed as "normal".

So you have to pay to have a detailed scan at 20 wks. The consultant couldn't get a good image due to angle at my scan and had to switch to 3D mode and it was pretty cool but at 21 weeks the baby did look a bit distorted and alien and it was a bit weird.

If you get a detailed 21 week scan as part of your care, I think an extra 3D one is fun but they should not replace a detailed scan. All the 3D places I checked with here said that they weren't doing a medical check (no brain mapping like they do at the detailed scan). So for me, it was more important pay a bit more to get the medical info - the 3d was an unexpected bonus.

has anyone had one done successfully with an anterior placenta? i'm really in two minds about it - have one booked for end of month but the booklet I have says if the baby is not in a good position and you have to go back, they charge you £95 - as it is we are going to have to pay £160....

we are just so skint atm and I feel like I'm putting dp under pressure to have it done - my placenta is anterior, does this mean it will be difficult to see baby's face?

Anterior placenta's are a little difficult....I had one, and my baby face was in it on 1st scan. But at First Choice Baby Scan, in Warrington (www.firstchoicebabyscan.com) I was offered a second scan free of charge and this time got some really good pictures (girl who did the scan did tell me that if she didn't get it that time I wouldn't get another repeat scan)...suppose I was lucky Smile

CrankyTwanky - Yes, there is a growing body of opinion that unneccessary scans aren't a good idea. Babies don't seem to enjoy being scanned or even having their heartbeats listened to on a doppler, which I think uses similar technology. They seem to move away, have elevated heartbeats or cover their faces if it gets too close. This is still pretty anecdotal as far as I'm aware, but there are certainly a growing number of MWs who prefer to use a Pinard wherever possible. (And you can listen in to the heartbeat on a pinard-stethoscope!)

I personally wouldn't have a 3/4D scan just because I wanted to look at the baby, though if it was medically required I'd do it. DS was scanned six times for medical reasons Sad and this one has has five scans for medical reasons, though hopefully no more. And I know it's all down to personal preference, but it seems a bit sad to intrude that much into the baby's secret world, and actually get to see what they look like before they're born. Are there no surprises left any more? Sad

has had, I mean

I'm taking part in a study at my hospital and as part of the study they do a 3D scan to check growth etc, and I get to keep pictures, and I don't have to pay for them! Which is brilliant as I would have loved to have had a 3D scan for DD, but we just couldn't justify the expense at the time. They also take a bit longer at 12 & 19 week scan and give you chance to ask a lot more questions etc as they are not so rushed, so I feel really lucky Smile

I had one at "myultrababy" in Watford a few weeks ago. Excellent service. They have a website. Also there is a place in St Albans that does it.

4D? Thought it was called a 3D scan, isnt the 4th dimension "time"..? :)

33k we went to the same place , window to the womb, the guy is def abit of a character! Got to say tho our pics were great!

Scheherezadea · 12/07/2011 09:37

We had one done, but for free - our consultant at the fetal medicine unit did one and printed us out some pictures. It was amazing to see him moving around so much!

grumpypants · 12/07/2011 09:40

hmmmmm we had one down, as we had a bit more cash by baby number four. Very nice, at the time. Photos, disc, movie bit all now gathering dust somewhere. Totally and utterly pointless esp if you spend money that's not disposable.

Renaissance227 · 13/07/2011 15:15

Where did you have one free Scheherezadea?

Renaissance227 · 28/07/2011 15:45

Can you remember where you had a free one Scheherezadea?
