I think I ate cheese made with unpasteurized milk...should I panic?

I just realized that the cheese I had last night for tea and this afternoon for lunch might have been made with unpasteurized milk. It was Gruyère Swiss.

Do I panic? Anyone know the chances of it actually hurting the baby? I'm 12 weeks today, BTW.

I thought that Gruyere is made with pasteurized milk?

Tee2072 · 10/12/2008 14:05

Not according to what I just found online!

I think the risk is of Salmonella - so if you're not vomiting then it's fine.

no, you shouldn;'t

most supermarket cheese will prob be pasteurised, despite what it may say online,

however the risk with them is, i believe, that of contracting something like listeria.
it's pretty rare though, and i think in the uk over the last few years the only cases of listeria from milk products were actually from pasteurised ones, so i wouldn't worry

have eaten gruyere recently and am pg
didn't realise it was a no-no...if indeed it is
there's never any point panicking about these things though

think bramshott is right-if it hasn't made you ill, then there's no need to worry

definitely don't panic, you can't uneat it! and imagine you were french. you'd be living off the stuff and guffawing at the nervous brits. when i was pregnant i went to a bbq at a french couple's house. she was pg too. They served rare pork chops and chocolate mousse with raw eggs in it. i just went for it, and the kids are fine....

seriously though, if you develop an upset stomach as a result then go to the gp. otherwise it's fine.

Ah, just googled. Is unpasteurised normally. What does it say on the wrapper?

Tee2072 · 10/12/2008 14:08

Well, it was Tesco brand and I just checked their website and it was definitely unpasteurised.

I feel fine, so I am going to have to assume everything is okay.

Gruyere is hard cheese anyway, so no panic. only panic over soft cheeses, i think. Well, don't panic at all as risks are tiny and it's done now anyway. You'll be fine.

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 10/12/2008 14:11

No. Just googled again. It is soft cheeses like Brie and Camembert or blue veined cheeses that are dangerous in pregnancy.

Tee2072 · 10/12/2008 14:12

So unpasteurized hard cheeses are okay? For sure?

Sorry, can't link from my phone. If you google gruyere pasteurized pregnant you get several websites all saying that hard cheeses are fine.

littlefrog · 10/12/2008 14:17

unpasteurised hard cheeses are fine, according to the centre for pregnancy nutrition.

Tee2072 · 10/12/2008 14:18

Whew. Thanks, mmeherewegoawassailindt!!!

also if you go into any wanky/poncey/lovely (take your pick) cheese shop they will tell you that unpasteurised hard cheeses are actually better for you as the milk contains more nutrients. Am a bit tbh at this but am happy to believe that is good for me + bump to have the tastier cheese given that i cannot eat salami, oysters, serrano ham and the like
