I know that it's been covered in earlier thread about UK flights a bit later in pregnancy but justhave been wondering if I have been worrying uneccessarily.

I'll be 26 - 28 weeks when I go to France. I've been a bit undecided about going but my dd who's 2 will probably have a lovely time in the snow. My dh is really excited about the skiing - although my snowboard will be collecting dust this season . I love the area and am looking forward to spend some time out there.

I'll be staying in an appartment in the centre of town and have lots of family and friends will be staying in the town in the same period. I speak very little French but a few relatives speak excellent french - so would have plenty of translators if required. I also have been to the same place for a few years so knowthe area well.

The local maternity hospital is about 20min drive away. I've got pregnancy travel insurance and just ordered my european health card.

I'm fit and healthy - I work as a midwife so I know that i'm unlikely to have any problems. However, I keep thinking - what if I have reduced movements out there, or slip on the snow - I won't have the safety net of my lovely maternity unit just a stone throw from my house with all my lovely collegues who I know and trust to care for me!!!!

I know it's normal to feel a bit vulnerable when you are pregnant and get the nesting feeling.

Anybody think I'm mad for feeling so wimpy!! I haven't booked my flights yet - just incase I feel even more and more nervous about it (planning to go in January).

Oh dear - anybody got some nice positive stories about being away in pregnancy?

yes

go, relax and enjoy

Springflower · 27/11/2008 23:03

I think it sounds great. I went away in my 1st and 2nd pregnancies at around 20 weeks and then 30 weeks (not in the snow) and loved being away and able to relax. Like you say, the chances of anything happening are very very slim and you have people with you who can help and you can always phone the UK if you need to about anything. As long as you can relax and enjoy it ....

Reesie · 27/11/2008 23:13

Yes - you are right - I should just go away and have a lovely time. I can relax and have a lovely couple of weeks with dd before the new baby shortly comes along. We can make snowmen and she can ride around on her little sleigh, then meet up with friendsn and family for hot chocolate. I can't belive I'm being such a wet fish about it. It must be the pregnancy hormones making me a bit insecure!!!!!

Looks like you have all eventualities covered really. As a midwife, you know all the professional answers. As a mum and a mum to be, then you must instinctively know what you want to do. And they do have doctors in France !(and my experience of the hospital in Chamonix is that they tend to speak passable English).

I'd go. And my skis probably wouldn't be collecting dust! Not all the time anyway. Lots of books, magazines, hot choc and snowmen with DD. Yeay!

PavlovtheCat · 28/11/2008 08:03

Oh defintely go, you will have a fantastic time!!! Your DD will LOVE the snow!

lilymolly · 28/11/2008 08:05

I have decided to get the train instead, but thats cos of my fear of flying more than anything else

I would say to you.....Go go go and enjoy your self

Go!! I am going on a family (dh, ds, mum, brother & sil) ski holiday to Bulgaria at 27 weeks on the basis that the rest of the family can ski, ds (4) can go to childrens club & I can curl up by the fire & relax or wander off for a hot chocolate before meeting everyone for lunch Also there's a lovely spa ;) But shhh.. don't tell dh!

moaningminnie2020 · 28/11/2008 10:20

I went for a fortnight in Portugal- flying out at 26 weeks and came back at 28 weeks, in September, and it was great - first beach holiday for toddler and last chance before we had 2 babies and the idea of travelling got too scary...

Have a lovely time!

Anna8888 · 28/11/2008 10:24

No.

Your DD will not have a lovely time - at 2 she will get very cold very quickly, find walking in the snow very tiring and want you to carry her all the time

Newb · 28/11/2008 12:15

Dear All

Just for info. I live in Switzerland and the doctors tell us here not to go above 2500 metres when pregnant. Assume this is because of less oxygen. Bottom / middle of the resort is usually fine though.

Newb loving dusts off her skis even though they have to stay in the cellar this year

wideratthehips · 28/11/2008 13:24

go, have a great time but..

i will be 30wks preg. just after christmas and there is a big family holiday to the french italian alps (pil have a huge farm style house there) but i have refused to go and ds2 who will be 22 months is not going. dh and ds1 who is 4.5 are going and will be travelling by overnight train. dh tried to persuade me that it would be all lovely hot chocolate, marshmallows and lots of people to help...but people are there for their holiday too and i dont want to be stuck pulling a humphing toddler around on a sledge on my own. the thought of falling over terrifies me..i've fallen over there before during the summer when ds2 was a baby in a sling (wearing proper boots etc).

what Anna8888 says rings true to me....

dinkystinky · 28/11/2008 14:08

Go Reesie and have a lovely time. You sound like you've got all your bases covered for over there - though dont forget to take your maternity notes with you.
