Ketones in urine-what are they and how do i get rid?

Hello,
I'm nearly 32 weeks and i have lots of complications-high risk beacuse of a previous emercency c section with ds1,low lying placenta, and now gestational diabetes.
Saw the MW today and she found ketones in my urine sample.
She asked if i was eating properly-i am albeit on a very strict diabetic diet-then she didnt mention it anymore.
I have come home and started worrying.
I'm not sure if the diabetes lack of food has caused the ketones or is it something else.
Any ideas will be great.
Many thanks

I had ketones in both pregnancies, due to hyperemesis and severe dehydration. They kept telling me to eat little and often but since I was throwing everything up, even water, it wasn't easy advice to follow! I ended up on a drip several times each pregnancy. It sounds like they are monitoring you very closely though, so try to only worry if they sound worried! And eat little and often. Take care.

nobodysfool- It does sound like you will need some form of medication hopefully this will help you conytrol your BM's and allow you to enjoy your pregnancy

Good luck with your appointments!!

how did your appoontment go nobodysfool?

nobodysfool · 28/11/2008 09:12

Looks that way doesn't it doris

sqidgy I saw the diabetic nuse and she seemed very pleased with my radings and said to give myself a break and not to worry so much.
Oddly enough i had the highest reading so far yesterday morning with a bowl of porridge 10.7!!
I wont be eating that again!!!
She said to see how the weekend goes then to ring on Monday if i'm still concerned and talk to a nurse and they will sort out medication.I have the choice of metformin-she warned me of the side effects like you said and insulin-i think this will be my preffered option as i can alter the dosage to what my body needs (more in the morning much less the rest of the day)Still worried silly about having meds while pregnant though.
On the up side the baby is doing really well and no excess fluid so i'm pleased that he is feeling no effects from all this as that's the main thing.

Hi nobodysfool,
Our paths crossed on another GD thread and although I've not had keytones in my urine I thought I would give you an update.
I've been put on metformin to control my GD - initially just one tablet morning and night, but that has now been doubled. I've not had any of the side effects that have been mentioned, maybe I'm just lucky! Blood sugars are now pretty much under control (they stay between 5.5 and 6.3 all the time), however I've not been able to find any snacks that don't send levels all over the shop. So it's 3 square meals a day and nothing else for me at the moment. Hospital are quite happy with progress and baby is healthy (dare I say it, looks like this one will be smaller than my last). Metformin tablets are also an appetite supressant, so I'm now lighter than I was pre-preg. Hospital have told me that because I am now 35 weeks it is considered too late to put me onto insulin as it can take 2-3 weeks to get the dosage right, so I'm happy .
Good luck with whatever you decide to go with.

Hello heathermummy.
Glad you and baby are doing well.
Your levels are really good now i bet you feel chuffed they are settled.
How high were your readings going before they put you on metformin?
I have found that babybel light cheese are a really good snacks sometimes with pickled onions.Yum.At least you don't have long to go now.

Hi
I started taking my levels at the same time as I tried diet control only. To be honest, they were all over the place with no rhyme nor reason to them - anything from 6.0 to 10.5 on a bad day. The metformin has really levelled them off. The hospital have said that they ideally want levels to be under 6.0 but they'll come and go a little. I go every Monday morning for monitoring now which is a bit of a pain, but at least I know that both me and the baby are healthy.
I'll give the babybel light a try as a snack - I get ravenous at times.

Glad they have got it under control,it must be such a relief.
Hope everything goes smoothly for you and lo.Keep in touch and let me know how you get on.

In a non diabetic, ketones can indicate dehydration. Its worth ensuring you are well hydrated before having urine analysis
