I had the GCT last week this is the one where you dont starve your drink the glucose and have your sugars tested with a pin prick an hour later.

My reading 7.7, the hospital requires it to be 7.1 or lower.

I now need to do the full GTT in 2 week.

But im starting to panic now ive been reading through some threads on here and my reading of 7.7 seems to be quite high, the thing is i didnt actually have anything to eat before the test (late on school run forgot to grab snack bars on the way out ect ect) so technically speaking my reading would have been higher if id eaten.

So have any of you MNers failed the GCT but been fine with GTT???

Sorry never heard of a GCT, the usual test done if your have a random raised glucose level , is to have a lab sample sent following a 12 hour fast. What you describe seems a modified test - where was it done and why? If you don't mind me asking?
The other test that is done is a oral glucose tolerance test - fast for 12 hours - blood test for fasting levels to lab - glucose drink and water - wait 2 hours then a second blood test to lab.

It was done at my local maternity unit. I had to have it done as i have an above average BMI.

It is quite a new test that they have introduced as i just had the GTT i my previous 2 pregnancys (for the same reason) but they have now introduced this glugose challenge test as a starting point IYSWIM, its then just the women that fail the GCT that have the full GTT.

I had a v high blood sugar reading from a routine test (it was about 8 IIRC) then passed the GTT no problem. But if there is a problem then you want it to be picked up as soon as possible. How many weeks are you? I was panicking because the dodgy result was from the 1st trimester so an indication of type 2 diabetes rather than GD, but it turned out to be a freak result.

twocutedarlings · 23/11/2008 22:25

Im 26 weeks EffiePerine, I will be 28 weeks when i have the GTT.

To be totally honest im not so worried about GD it's the idea of a medicalist birth that freaking me out.

I had an horrific labour with DD1 and a unplanned home birth with DD2, so this time round i had hoped for a home birth.

What were your GTT results like in your previous pregnancies? I've not heard of the test you had either, but I'm assuming you weren't actually found to have gestational or Type 2 diabetes before.

EffiePerine · 23/11/2008 22:33

yes I wasn't too enamoured of that aspect either. But as far as I remember early induction (for one) is no longer recommended unless there are specific problems with the size of the baby. You prob won't be able to get your home birth, but that doesn't mean you'll end up with every intervention going - if the test DOES come back positive then you can discuss your options with your mw and there are many MNers with experience of GD who can help

twocutedarlings · 23/11/2008 22:33

elkiedee - No my GTT were fine with my other 2 no GD, ive no idea what the result were as all was ok.

I had the same test on Friday and am waiting for my results today - if they are above 7.5 then I have to have the GTT. (I posted a message about it last week but did not get any replies.) Have a useless midwife who only gives half the facts and leaves me in a constant state of panic.

The midwife at the hospital was very reassuring and said that if the results are positive they may send me for a growth scan and discuss my diet to try to control it with diet - apparently it is quite unusual to have to control it with insulin. She also said at our local hospital they will only let you go 7 days over and that they will probably monitor you more closely during the birth, but there is no reason why you can't still have the birth that you want (probably would not include a homebirth though) as I am hoping to still have a water birth if things are OK.

Am also pg with number 3 and had no problems with the first two. Am 38 weeks now.

Hope this helps a bit, jsut wanted to let you know that you are not alone going through this.

Just got call from hospital to say that I need to have a GTT later this week so I am completely panicking now. Seeing my midwife tomorrow and she is completely useless, so she will do bugger all to reassure me - as usual as soon as I see her my pulse starts racing.

Just want to get this baby out now so I can get back to normal.

sorry things are so shitty at the moment for you cravingchocolate i shall keep my fingers crossed for you, let us know how you get on

Hi Hedgewitch

I shall take your advice on the sweetstuff, i spoke to my MW today and like CC she was bloody usless .

Thinking about it, i dont normally eat much sweet stuff, im more into savoury - but the day before the GCT test we ate out for tea and i had a big serving of apple cumble .

Saw my midwife yesterday and as usual she wound me up and sent me into a panic - my blood pressure was sky high by the time she took it (had just done school run for two children and rushed back to meet her -but she would not take that into account)

Had to go into the antenatal assessment unit to be monitored - when I got there blood pressure was absolutely fine, so it is def the stupid midwife! Monitored baby and my contractions, but they are just braxton hicks. Did a urine sample and there was no trace of glucose in the sample, and that is just from modifying my diet (eating wholewheat bread and pasta, no sugar added to anything and def no chocolate) - so even if I do fail the GTT if I carry on as I am it will be fine. I will let you know how it goes tomorrow, I have to be there at 9am.

The midwife did examine me at the hospital and the baby is completely engaged and I am 2cm dilated - she said she could feel the babys head through the cervix, which hopefully is a sign that something will happen soon...

Someone said on another thread that with gestational diabetes, neither you nor the baby are diabetic - the pregnancy is, and that really helped me to put it in perspective.

twocutedarlings · 27/11/2008 22:03

Sounds like a stressfull day chocolate !! but its certainly good new about LO being engaged and 2cm whoo hooo!! how fab!! it shouldnt be long now!!

Well things are going from bad to worse here ive had lots of pelvic pain for the last 5 weeks or so, and over the last few days its got alot worse. I spent the day in the maternity unit being prodded and poked and it appears that i may have a cyst or an absuss on my perinuem , i have to got back in for 9am tomorrow and have an MRI scan and then surgery to remove it . All this could be related to GD as its apparently common to get infections with GN.

So my head us spinning at the moment!!

Poor you - really hope that today went well for you.

I had my GTT today and the results came back fine which is a big relief as I failed the first test pretty badly - with 9. This time I was 3.7 after fasting and before the drink, then 5.6 when they did the blood 2 hours after the glucose drink. So it is possible to be fine with the GTT after the first test. Very relieved as I can now relax a bit.

Just want to get this baby out though! Apparently the baby is so low down they can't feel it's head at all - going to have a curry tonight!!

Hope you are OK after today - when is your GTT?

cravingchocolate · 28/11/2008 19:06

Meant to say as well, that when I asked about my last result being so high and this one being OK, they said that the other test is going to be phased out as it is not nearly as accurate as testing after fasting. HTH
