Some doctors/sonographers are able to tell gender at 13 weeks....did yours?

I had my first scan in Spain at about 13+4 and the doctor was able to tell the gender of my baby from the bone structure of the genitals area - he said he was about 96% certain.

I just read a thread from a women in France who said that same - that her doctor could tell the sex at 12 weeks, he said with 99% certainty in her case - I guess it depends on what position they are in as to the degree of certainty.

I get the impression that both these doctors are at the forefront of the profession in their countries, but I assume there are equally expert doctors here in the UK.

Does anyone have an experience in the UK of being told the sex early on? I realise the 'usual' expectation of finding out the gender is around 20 weeks. I just found the range quite intriguing and wondered about other peoples experiences.

We had a scan at at the Fetal Medicine Centre at 12 weeks, the doctor there said that the baby was a boy and he was proven right. He said it was a bit early at that stage to be absolutely sure and that if I had been coming in the next week he could have been more certain but that he would put money on it being a boy. Can't remember if it was to do with bone structure but he definitely mentioned something about charecteristics that were consistent with a boy baby (not the obvious either!).

I have had this done twice at the nuchal scan. Right both times (a girl then a boy). All to do with "the angle of the dangle" apparently. The genitals look the same shape at this age but boys' point up and girls' to the side. Obviously the later you are scanned, the more likely it is to be correct, but I was told 80% with both of mine (and they were right)

If you google "angle of the dangle" you'll get lots more info.

I'm the OP's "woman in France" and can safely say that position of baby had nothing to do with telling the sex of the baby.

Doctor could freeze the image, cut and rotate at will. This way, he could see absolutely everything at every angle. If legs were blocking the view, cut and rotate.

At my 13 week scan and the sonographer said she was 70% sure it was a girl. Scans since then have not been so definite, but they've all said they couldn't see any signs it is a boy! Only 4 weeks to go until I find out for sure!

Yes at my nuchal scan (done in the UK at around 12 weeks I think) the doctor said he was pretty certain it would be a boy and he was right! I was amazed he could tell so early!

largeginandtonic · 21/11/2008 15:30

Yep i have been told this lo is a girl at 3 scans now, the first at 12 weeks. Will let you know for sure in another 8 when she arrives!

babypringle · 21/11/2008 17:33

nuchal fold scan said girl, 20 week scan said boy. 19 weeks to wait before we find out for sure. i'm wishing we'd never asked ...

5 pregnancies

1st - girl - NHS scan (at fetal medicine dept) identified correctly at 14 weeks.
2nd - girl - FMC scan in London, at 12 weeks identfied correctly as girl.
3rd - boy - NHS scan at 15 weeks couldn't tell, FMC scan at 19 weeks identified as boy.
4th - boy - private scan 16 weeks, couldn't tell (not a fetal medicine standard scan).
5th - ? - NHS scan at 13 weeks couldn't tell.

So pretty variable but the times where they've thought they've known they were right.

The sonographer asked us at the 12 weeks scan if we wanted to know - I didn't realise you could tell that early and said yes we'd like to know, but assume will have to wait until 20weeks, but she said that she'd made a note of what she thought now. DH said he'd like to know what she thought so she said 'We can be wrong at this stage, but I think they are girls' (this was after she'd delivered the news that we had non-id twins!) So we will wait to see at the 20 week scan, but she seemed very confident.
