I used unperfumed wipes from day one - seems fine to me.

TeenyTinyTorya · 20/11/2008 16:16

I did use cotton wool and water for a few weeks, just because their skin is so delicate. Next time I will probably use reusable cloth wipes though because it's such a faff. Wouldn't put the normal wipes on a newborn's skin, they sting me sometimes.

shitehawk · 20/11/2008 16:17

Well, you can use whatever you like. Your baby and all that.

But do it armed with the knowledge that a new born baby has very sensitive skin, and the wipes are impregnated with all kinds of chemicals which you don't get in wet cotton wool. Even the unperfumed ones have chemicals in them.

MrsMattie · 20/11/2008 16:18

I used fragrance free wipes as soon as the poos got big and stinky!

bubblagirl · 20/11/2008 16:33

i used wipes but at hospital they made my partner go out and buy cotton wool so maybe best to take some with you as hospital was strict on it being cotton wool and warm water only

broodymom · 20/11/2008 16:33

You can use whaterver you like but if using wipes i would use unperfumed sensitive ones.
I used damp cotton wool for the first few weeks, it is softer on their skin.

Ronaldinhio · 20/11/2008 16:41

I cleaned curry of a white t shirt last night with an unfragranced huggies wet wipe
(my insane mum's idea from a few months ago)

put it in the wash no stain

we clean our leather sofa with them
better than anything else

makes you think though......

countingto10 · 20/11/2008 16:43

I used baby lotion and cotton wool for the first few weeks with my four. It seemed more efficient than water alone (for the poos) but not as harsh as wipes.

curlywurlycremeegg · 20/11/2008 16:44

The water only skincare advise is well researched by a midwife Sharon Trotter. Obviously your baby, your choice, however she has nothing to gain from the results she has published from her research, unlike a large pharamcutical company or nappy organisation IYKWIM

The pink J&J ones are the worst. Try wiping your eye with any brand you are thinking about using, it's a big indication of how gentle they are.

I agree with Ronaldinhio, it's scary what you can do with a baby wipe. My parents only use baby wipes on their sofa, never spent money on leather wipes.

I used cotton wool until it became obvious I was the only one still doing it, this time I'm thinking about buying reusable wipes as they can go in with the real nappies. Tink has allergies so it's safer I think to use something as gentle as possible.

poppy34 · 20/11/2008 17:06

had some dirt cheap little flannel things that used with water for first few weeks but do use unperfumed wipes -did the make up test first on them ( i couldn't agree more with J&J being like paint stripper)

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 20/11/2008 17:09

I buy baby wipes but would only ever use them for cleaning, particually good for all pen stains, I would never touch my baby with one, did you know they have anti-freeze in them?

I only use cloths and water for both my childrens hands, bums and faces.

poppy34 · 20/11/2008 17:12

if they are so good at cleaning, would they solve my current holy grail -getting carrot puree out of white baby gros?

fillybuster · 20/11/2008 17:14

i used unperfumed, sensitive skin ones for dd. ds was a PFB so of course it was cotton wool and water for the first 6 weeks or so....
