Yes, it is, because once they come to the UK they appear in the UK statistics. As I said earlier around 70 -75% of women with HIV in the UK come from Africa and the vast majority were infected there.

How are you forafriend? Hope you're ok with all this.

This is from Avert.org - an Aids information charity.

"Trends in HIV and AIDS Statistics

Since 1999 there has been a steep increase in the number of HIV diagnoses. During 2004, reports show that 5,016 people had been diagnosed with HIV in the UK. This number is expected to rise as further data are received (there were 6,932 reports in 2003). The major component of the rapid increase in recent years has been in heterosexually acquired infections. Although around 80% of these are contracted in countries with high HIV prevalence, infections acquired within the UK have also risen.

Heterosexuals
The number of heterosexually acquired HIV infections diagnosed in the UK has risen hugely over the last 15 years. In 1999, for the first time, the rate of heterosexually acquired infection overtook the rate of infection in men who have sex with men. During 2003, there were 4,175 reports of heterosexually acquired HIV, and a total of 25,521 had been reported by the end of 2004.

Many of the new diagnoses are in people who probably acquired HIV in other countries. However, the number of infections probably acquired in the UK from heterosexual sex with a heterosexually-infected partner has soared from 139 in 1998 to 381 in 2003.

Giraffski - of course not, but in many areas of Africa heterosexually transmitted HIV is extremely common - it is absolutely epidemic. This is not the case in the UK, so even though HIV+ African women are only a small percentage of the general population, they form a large percentage of women with HIV in the UK, as it is much, much rarer in British born women.

aloha · 17/03/2005 22:34

Lockets, do you have a link to that study?

aloha · 17/03/2005 22:36

It seems extremely unlikely to me that half of all the people with HIV In the UK are teenagers born in the UK, given the statistics showing that of the many thousands of new infections in 2003/4 only a a few hundred were acquired in the UK across all age groups. But I'm prepared to change my mind if the evidence shows otherwise.

aloha · 17/03/2005 22:38

I can't find anything about teenagers and HIV on the BBC website.

Gwenick · 17/03/2005 22:39

I've just been looking on the UNAIDS website and can't find any 'specific' figures.

There is a poster campaign in the US at the moment of "ONe in 250 americans is HIV positive. Only one in 500 knows it."

According to this website , two teens per hour become infected in the US.

wheresmyfroggy · 17/03/2005 23:07

Now that is very scary

If you are a regular blood donor you will know that you are negative as your blood is tested every time you donate.

BunInTum · 14/04/2005 18:18

Hiya all, I had my prescreening tests 4 weeks ago now and had my scan the week after and no one has mentioned the test results to me. Would they have been in touch by now if it was +?
