arrgh - another night of really blocked nose and dry, sore throat from (I'm guessing) having to breathe through my mouth.
I'm 22 weeks, is this rhinitis likely to clear up or am I stuck with it til after birth now? I've got a lot of the symptoms of a heavy cold only I haven't actually got one!

If anybody has any remedies or solutions I'd be very grateful, if I am snoring I don't know about it and it's not a problem as husband isn't back for another 3 weeks!

Have a good day all xx

Hi,

I am afraid that i've had nasal congestion (day and night) for the last 20 weeks (am 39+6). It is CRAP to put it nicely! Steam breathing helps, olbas oil sometimes does the trick however dare i say it (im sure the docs wouldnt like it) - sinex clears it when you just cant cope with it anymore! In the middle of the night when i'm so blocked i cant cope anymore and my head feels all stuffed, i have a couple of squirts of it and within a couple of mins i can nod back off.

Titmouse, i am on the same boat as you!

I've been fully blocked since i got pregnant in the summer. At the same time I have also become a phlegm machine, even my todler says -Disgusting! when she sees me chucking out the phlegm.

The only thing that really helps me is to swithc the heating on at night, wearing 2 or 3 layers and do a long steaming session adding Olbas oil befor going to bed.

Gosh, I am truly hope these horrid symptoms dissapear after pregnancy...

x

Hi bunged up ladies,
thanks for your replies, much appreciated. I went to boots earlier for some olbas oil and I got this funky little fan thing that blows it out so I am giving it a go - got some sticky nose strips too!

Looks like I'm going to be congested for the long-haul then - ace, another thing you don't know about before you get pregnant!

I hope you all have a restful night, I intend to try! xx

I was blocked up like that for ages in this preg. I changed washing powder, got rid of flowers and pot-pouri etc and nothing helped. Went to chemist and was told nasal inhalers are safe during preg. Life saver at night

It better go when i give birth! If not, i'll be blaming it on this child! lol.

Acupuncture can really help too. I'm 17 weeks and have been bunged up for over a month. I went to see an acupuncturist this week and it's feeling much better. Worth a try since there isn't much else you can do!

Hi, I'm 35 weeks, and have had the same problem throughout. My DDs GP told me that after 12 weeks, Otrivine nasal spray was OK to use, as it is really localised and only a very minimal amount (if at all) crosses the placenta. I discussed it with my obstetrician, and he agreed - said you need to be a bit pragmatic about these things. One of the GPs in my GP practice is also pregnant, researched it and discussed it with her OB, and has also resorted to Otrivin when she can't take it any more. I only used it at night when it got really bad (i.e. so bad that Obas oil inhalations were pointless as nothing was going up my nose cos it was so blocked!) so that I could get some sleep, and only for 5 days at a time, with 2 weeks break between 5 day doses. I'm in NZ, and haven't had any problems buying it over here, but was in the UK in August and had to get DH to buy it for me as no one would sell it to me (apparently when you're pregnant you're no longer allowed to make decisions about your own body... ). However, in Spain, they wouldn't even sell me Obas oil!!!

I can really sympathise - my blocked nose gives me a post nasal drip, which gets caught in the back of my throat and makes me gag and throw up most mornings ( and had thought I'd done really well to avoid ms in 1st trimester )!

littlemissm · 24/11/2008 20:03

i had this problem with all my 6 pregnancies the only thing the doc said was safe was saline nasal drops. Mine was so bad it made me vomit when i used to brush my teeth cos i couldnt breath.Mine lasted all through pregnancy but was far worse in the first 2 trimesters.

tsom · 24/11/2008 22:40

had it with last two pregnancies and has just started again properly in the last week (22 weeks now), does go away after delivery though

MsG · 24/11/2008 22:44

Oh my word, I've been wondering why I'm so congested so often - didn't realise it could be a symptom. It's really annoying!

soapybubble · 25/11/2008 17:22

Sniff. sniff. I'm with you all on the congestion!
I've tried just about everything with very little success, and resort to sinex or otrivine when really bad.
My partner is very patient, but congestion = snoring = both of us having terrible night sleep. The alternative of the bedroom smelling of mixture of vicks/olbas oil and me wearing a nasal strip makes her wonder what she ever saw in me in the first place!!!!!
Happy days.
