Hi

I am 7 weeks into my second PG - I have just noticed a very small amount of bright red blood when wiping after a wee. I have been having cramping pains for last 3 weeks and everyone has said it's my uterus strecthing etc. Today the pain has been quite bad all day and now this blood. I've even been checking myself convinced I'd started bleeding like a period.

It was really the smallest amount but it was there, sorry to be gross but it was straeked in some clear discharge. I don't know what to do, I'm due in work tomorrow but I really want to ring a midwife or something and see if I can be referred to an Early Pregnancy Unit - I'm so scared - I had no problems with last PG.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

hi there, I am pregnant with my 3rd and have had bleeding at between 6-8 weeks with all of them.

it's very, very common. but of course if it gets heavier or you get more painful cramps then it's best to phone EPU or your midwife to get checked out.

Gillyan · 18/11/2008 19:54

Hi, thanks for that, would you go to work tomorrow if it were you? i just feel like bursting into tears. I'm probably being irrational and I have heard about it being common, do I just ring the midwife and do they refer you if needed to EPU?

Hi Gillyan
I've had probs in pregnancies too, and although light bleeding early on is common and can be quite normal due to increased pressure and implantation, any kind of bleed should really be checked out. Don't want to worry you, but I would personally go to EPU tomorrow if just to put your mind at rest.
Goodluck

Gillyan · 18/11/2008 19:56

thanks littleboyblue do you know, do youjust turn up at hospital or do you ring a midwfie first?

OP posts:
fymandbean · 18/11/2008 20:00

I think it varies - here you have to have a doctor/midwife referral but they don't turn you away of you just turn up.

littleboyblue · 18/11/2008 20:04

Yeah, think it varies. Each time it happened to me, I had to go through GP for a referal as hadn't been assigned a m/w at that point.
Although last time, my gp told me it wiould be quicker to call the EPU myself to get seen, but it turns out that gp's get charged for reffering you or something .
See your gp in morning as first point of contact I think. But I'd def push to get scanned tomorrow.

Gillyan · 18/11/2008 20:11

Thanks guys I will ring hospital first thing in morning i think and then try GP if no luck - thanks for your advice - I might go and search through stuff the MW gave me last week and see if there is a nummber for EPU or something

I would take the day off work personally, if you see GP they are likely to tell you to rest anyway. I had bleeding and cramping from 51/2 weeks to 10 weeks (now 19 weeks) and it wasn't a relaxing experience. When I was 4 weeks pg (not that I knew I was pg) I was awake half of one night with the worst period pains ever!

Round here you definitely have to get referred to the EPU from GP unless you are a real emergency. You definitely need to get it checked out, because without having a scan it's impossible to know whether everything is OK or not.

callmeovercautious · 18/11/2008 20:24

Phone in sick. Go to the GP, call as soon as they open and talk to the receptionist and they will probably fit you straight in.

If they can't then just go to the local EPU.

Bleeding is common and can be caused by lots of other things rather than the PG itself. Better to get checked out though

Gillyan · 19/11/2008 00:58

Hi everyone - i decided to phone the hospital and spoke to a MW - she was very nice and said I should go straight to A&E

I got there and a doctor saw me - he then got an Obs doc down - to cut a long story short - they are pretty confident it is not an eptopic PG. They dipped my urine and foond I have a urinary tract infection - even though I have no pain/burning when I wee - my temperature is up too. Doc said UTI can lead to a miscarrage, she then said that I was having a threatened miscarrage.

i am going to EPU on Thursday morning for a scan - as I'm not bleeding heavily or in too much pain they said I could wait till then but if anything gets worse then I can go straight back.

Got to go sn see GP on Friday for the full results of urine sample as I might not be on the right anti - biotics

All in all very impressed with the hospital - just a waiting game now - I just hope everything calms down and scan is normal

Thankyou so much for all of your advice.

That all sounds good. Didn't knoe UTI's could lead to m/c though. My m/w said it wouldn't affect my baby (I've been on 4 courses of anti-b's in 14 weeks). Health care here is rubbish though so she's prob wrong!
Take the rest of the week off wrk and relax as much as poss.

Gillyan · 19/11/2008 11:12

Hi littleboyblue thanks - I am just resting -

I didn't know about UTI and mc link either but doc said it is more so in first 12 weeks and it's only if it's not treated that it can cause mc

She said it was lucky that I went in really because unless I had started with any burning/ stinging when peeing I would not have had my urine dipped till next ante natal appoint in about 5 weeks

fingers crossed this is just a blip and all will be okay

OP posts:
littleboyblue · 19/11/2008 12:10

I'm sure everything'll be fine. I know people that have bled throughout pregnancy and had perfectly healthy babies.
I've m/c 3 times so know how scary any amount of blood or tiny ache can be.
Godluck tomorrow. X

Gillyan · 19/11/2008 16:17

Thank you, sorry to hear about your mc's. Are you expecting now?

OP posts:
littleboyblue · 19/11/2008 20:55

Thank you. We are expecting now, I'm 28 weeks.
I had 2 m/c, then my 3rd pregnancy went full term and we had a lovely baby boy who is now 15 months, we fell preg again in March/April and had a massive painful bleed at start of May, still felt a bit odd 6 weeks later so did another test which was positive!!
Had early scans and everything incase it was incomplete or had lost half of a multiple, but was new pregnancy and so far, everything has gone well. Doesn't stop the fear though.
Come on tomoz if you're up to it and let us know what happens. Fingers crossed.
Anything happened today?

Gillyan · 19/11/2008 22:13

Aww good luck with this one.

Nothing today, no more bleeding but still crampy pain but not as bad - I don't want to tempt fate but I am quite hopefull for tomorrow, I'll defo let you know tomorrow x

callmeovercautious · 19/11/2008 22:16

Good news then I hope all goes well tomorrow X

Gillyan · 20/11/2008 12:55

Hi

All is well! Yey!!!!!!!!!!!

Had an internal scan ans baby was there with heart beating stronglt - it dated me as 6 weeks and 4 days.

Doc said there isa nothing wrong to see and it could of been a one off with the bleed and hopefully the bad cramps are just that, bad cramps but not dangerous

I am so relieved, I can tell you!

Thanks everyone for being so nice and supportive

littleboyblue · 20/11/2008 17:10

Fantastic news Gillyan, am so pleased for you. It is such a relief to see that heartbeat isn't it? Did you have a little cry? I'm welling up now and don't even know you, bloody pregnancy hormones!!!!
WELCOME TO THE CLUB

callmeovercautious · 20/11/2008 22:40

Congratulations

Just wait - you will be posting about morning sickness in no time at all

Gillyan · 20/11/2008 23:25

arh thanks guys - I did well up a bit but my boyfriend was terrible, this is his first as I have a previous child and I don't think it clicked with him I was PG till he saw that heartbeat - the scan pic's were totally shadowy and you really couldn't make out the shape of the little bean on the pics but he took it to work with him to show all his friends and that made me cry more - he was like a little lamb bouncing around, it was just so sweet and a far cry from my all alone first PG

Morning sicknness was in fact back with avegence today - I remember feeling the other day so upset in case I had lost the baby that I would never moan about any symptoms again yet you should of heard me tonight!!

I insisted on us having a takeaway pizza which came and I had one piece and then threw it all away!! He he

brettgirl2 · 22/11/2008 15:22

That's brilliant news

I have an early scan picture at 5+4 (I was really lucky that there was a heartbeat visible this early). It's ever so funny, it's just like a little circle!

I will keep my fingers crossed that the bleeding has stopped for you for good. Mine was determined to put me through it for as long as possible!

reluctantincubator · 25/11/2008 16:33

Really glad to hear all is well. I remember being at the same stage and being terrified of every twinge and cramp that it would end in mc.

Out of interest, (from the reading around the subject I did at the time, as I understand it) I think your underlying hormone cycle doesn't simply disappear when you are PG, and the most likely times for bleeds is at the time when your first two periods would have been due were you not pregnant. While bleeding at these times can indicate a threatened mc, they are often just down to residual hormones and/or implantation and pass without incident.

[I wld check this info before relying on it though as I cant remember my sources now.]b
