Hello,

Have decided that at 39 weeks pregnant, I am about to leave all my dignity behind so I might aswell do it now! If you don't like graphic talk - leave now!

I've read everything i can find on a "show" but am still finding everything useless! This is my 1st pregnancy and i don't know whether i've had one or not. I've had a heavier discharge for the last 2 weeks which is normal but last night i went to the loo and found a couple of gloopy bits (look like fresh snot) the size of small buttons. Went again during the night and first thing this morning but nothing. Went about an hour ago and there was another one but it was a bit smaller.

I've read how the plug can break down instead of just coming out so do you think this is what mine could be doing? I was convinced i'd go into labour at 37 weeks when i had 5 days of constant niggles and contractions (some quite strong) but it all tailed off - think her head was engaging. Been having a lot of pressure but no real niggles since then. However last night i went to bed with backache and periody cramps, woke up with them too but now they've gone.

I've even gone as far as googling images on it (not nice) but i didnt see what i had.

I dont really want to ring my midwife - we dont exactly get on + she doesnt help to make me feel less stupid!

Any thoughts gratefully received!

It is like a big bit of snot when it comes out - completely freaked me out!

So I think things could be happening - GOOD LUCK!

Nbg · 17/11/2008 13:16

Yes that does sound like your show but its coming out in bits rather than one great big lump

Things are starting for you!

solo · 17/11/2008 13:21

My first labour started with the whole plug coming away in the bath. I'd started contractions half an hour beforehand and I gave birth the following day. The second one, I started losing bits of the plug over several weeks(from around 37 weeks)before going into labour a week late!
It does sound like the show, so try not to worry and make sure you are ready and packed. Good luck!

babylove123 · 17/11/2008 13:37

Ooooh how exciting! Thanks! I know it could be a while away yet but i'm glad to hear that things might at least be on its way - i'm getting seriously fed up! I've always said i think she will be earlier than my due date and my midwife (the one i dont get on with) has always laughed at me and told me that it is highly unlikely this would ever happen - ok that may be true but let a girl live in hope! Lol, this baby has 6 days to prove her wrong - COME ON BABY!

Thanks everyone

Good luck
I hope she does come on time!

JennysMummy · 17/11/2008 13:49

I'm also 39 weeks, & I've been getting discharge like that for a few weeks now.. it's really disgusting! With DD1 I lost the plug in one go during early labour, but I think this time round it's coming away in bits.

I hope things happen for you soon!

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 17/11/2008 13:51

ohhh fingers crossed for you it sounds like a show to me

pucca · 17/11/2008 13:53

I had a big blob come away then little bits over the next 6 days, it is alot like snot but can have bits of blood in it too, its gross isn't it? lol.

I went into labour 6 days after my big blob, so its definately a good sign of something going on, another i noticed about my show was it smelt funny (gross i know!), it smelt sweet a bit like when your waters go.

Good luck, tis VERY exciting

littleboyblue · 17/11/2008 13:54

My first came out as a huge yellow/green blood covered lump of nasty, scary goo! Luckily I was already at hospital but I've heard too that it can break down. I know this sounds rank, but I don't supposed you saved any of it so you can pop to the hospital and show them? Give the labour ward a call and see what they say. GOODLUCK

broodymom · 17/11/2008 14:52

The day i went into labour my fore or hind ( cant remember which one they said) waters broke just little trickles then i had a couple of bouts of yellow/blood stained goo dd was born next day.

babylove123 · 17/11/2008 17:32

Thanks everyone!

Pucca - can i just say, i too have smelt mine (makes us sound crazy doesnt it?!) I think after 39 weeks of pregnancy we're allowed to do some strange things! I too would say it was "sweet" smell - strange......

Littleboyblue - no, didnt save it. DP was actually very interested too - i thought he'd go "eewwwww!" but he was so excited, hehe - what does pregnancy do to us?! To be honest, our nearest hospital is 20 miles away so it isnt too easy to get there anyway.

Broodymom - Can i ask how you knew your waters broke? I've started wearing a panty liner coz the last 4/5 days i've been getting extra fluid.....i'm asuming it isnt my waters! She's been kicking me well so she must be fine!

Good luck Jennysmummy!

Thanks to everyone else for taking an interest and helping me

I had this the week before the birth. Had the 'big show' after a sweep.

broodymom · 17/11/2008 18:26

It was first thing in the morning i woke up thinking im bursing for a pee and jumped out of bed thinking i was wetting myself ran to loo sat there for about 10 mins thinking it was the longest pee on earth, then it dawned on me it was my waters! it never stopped just a slow constant trickle! no huge gush or anything. Midwife said it was fore or hind waters thats why it trickles out and not a gush. Same thing with both my dds both when i was sleeping, so i have a waterproof mattress cover at the ready!

fgpl · 17/11/2008 18:58

2 days before I had my first baby I woke up with a gooey snot like going on in my pants. Had period type pains from there on and a constant damp blood stained type discharge. I was 37 weeks and 3 and was convinced that this wasnt really the start of things. It wasnt anywhere near as dramatic as I imagined.I was really unsure of what to do for fear of looking stupid so carried on as if nothing happening, didnt even mention it to any of my nearest an dearest. Eventually, that night, I gave myself a stern talking to and rang delivery suite. they called me in and confirmed that yes my waters had gone.
20 hours later my son was born.

nobodysfool · 17/11/2008 19:02

Shit.
I'm worried now.
I have had the same thing happen to me over the last 2 weeks and i'm only 30 wks.

kitkat9 · 17/11/2008 20:27

what's been happening, nobodys?

if it's increased discharge, I wouldn't worry, but if it's lots of fluid you need to get checked asap.

nobodysfool · 17/11/2008 20:36

Not fluid but (sorry to be so graphic but,) snotty like lumps.A couple of times there has been a streak of blood but usually just clear.I don't have any pain with it or any other symptoms and just assumed it was things moving and my cervical mucuas changing.Wondered if it was linked to my low lying placenta.

JennysMummy · 17/11/2008 21:02

The mucus plug can reform if it comes away too early, so I wouldn't worry too much nobodysfool. I've been getting that kind of discharge for weeks now.. I'm not totally sure when it started, but it was quite a while back now. Maybe mention it to the midwife if you're concerned, but I'm sure there's nothing to worry about as long as you're not having regular contractions, losing fluid or bleeding like a period.

nobodysfool · 17/11/2008 21:35

Thanks jennysmum i thought it was nothing to worry about then i read this thread.

babylove123 · 17/11/2008 22:17

Thanks for all the messages - I'm glad nobodysfool got some reassurance from this thread too.

I have to admit that i thought a "show" would be dramatic and so noticable - but it isnt! I wish there was more information out there on these bits, the midwife has never even spoken to me about this sort of thing.

How can they tell if your waters have broken? Is there some way of telling? Do you think i should ring the midwife tomorrow? I wish i had a nice midwife where i didnt feel so stupid in front of her. I said to her that i'd been having contractions last week and she laughed at the thought of it being to do with labour - said those are BH and just makes me feel like i'm bad for not knowing that it isnt real labour signs.

babylove123 your mw sounds like a real help. Not
Some of them really know how to make you feel daft.I remember my 1st MW managed to do this everytime i saw her.
Luckily the second time around you know a bit more-well a bit anyway
Pregnancy is a real learning curve isn't it?

babylove123 · 17/11/2008 22:43

Hi nobody. Yeh, shes lovely - not. TBH, i think we clash because of personality rather than her deliberatly trying to make me feel bad. Shes a little older (mid 50's) and i'm early 20's so i think that doesnt help! She is quite old fashioned in her approach and dont think she realises she is making me feel like the biggest thicko in the world. I think she's used to having older women who have had more than one etc and know wot they're looking for! I've even come home sobbing saying i'm a bad mum for not knowing. There is another midwife who works for the other surgery but i'm not allowed to see her as she doesnt work for my doctors.....grr!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 17/11/2008 22:48

Yup- sounds like a "show"!! Exciting! With dd1 I had her 24hours after my show, with dd2 it was 6d after (!) with ds I didn't have one!

LOL at your lovely MW telling you you wouldn't go early- clairvoyant is she?? REally get at self- assured mw's who have seen it all before and know better than you- mine tried to tell me (very condescendingly!) when I was in labour with dd1 that I was most certainly NOT ready to push and "trust me- you have HOURS to go!" until I insisted on a number between 1 and 10 (!) and was found (to her panic!) to be 10! You go girl- prove her wrong!

babylove123 · 17/11/2008 22:55

Jooly - hehe you made me chuckle, thanks! Luckily we're having her not at the local hospital as such, we're going onto the next closest one as we prefered the labour ward so she def wont be there!

You're right - it is a case of, we've seen this all before, we've seen it done better than you, we've been asked that Q before!
