Flying longhaul in early pregnancy - do I need those support stocking thingies for DVT? Also airline food - is it ok?

I wore the pantyhose stockings when I flew at 30 weeks with DS, but is there an increased risk of DVT even in 1st trimester?

Airline meals - does the fact that they have been kept warm for ages mean they are teeming with bacteria? I can't remember what I did last time...should I request veggie meals, or no cheese/eggs?

Thanks

goodness, I'd never thought about the food thing - I flew at 8 weeks pregnant with dd and ate everything that was put in front of me and wore the dvt stockings just because it was longhaul not because I was pregnant.

Hopefully someone in the know will be able to give you better advice.

Going anywhere nice?

stockings for anyone on a longhaul flight - pregnant or not.

Food should not be served at all if it has not been prepped correctly.

didnt even think about the food thing when i flew.

I'd do the stocking thing, pregnant or not.. its long haul & Can't hurt!!

Hope you have a better flight that me, i flew To the usa 8 weeks, my morning sickness kicked in while i was there & The 10 hours flight home was spent with head in sick bag And i was flying solo too!!

Hope your going somewhere nice!! x

you can ask to be "frisked" rather than go through the x ray thing if you want

Astrophe · 15/11/2008 23:04

It's a metal detector not an X-ray, unless you are intending to go through the baggage scanner. Therefore, you can just go through it as usual.

bump = any thoughts on the food?

I flew to Aust when I was 13wks pregnant. I wore the horrid stockings as a precaution. Maybe you should avoid any seafood or salads and take some snacks on the plane with you.

I have flown between Uk & Oz many times with a couple of different airlines and never had any problem with food being not heated properly or food poisoning. Just take the same precuations you normally would with food.

Remember to drink loads of water which helps with the prevention of DVT - as you will be walking to the loo every 10 mins!!

Def wear the stockings, drink plenty of water and pump your feet up and down from the ankles fast and often, also circling your toes is good.
As for the food, it will have to have been thoroughly reheated so I would think the usual pg precautions would be sufficient.
Have a great trip

Astrophe · 21/11/2008 09:28

So you think reheated milk and cheese and meat ok?

I have flown loads whilst preggers and airline food has been completely fine. I wouldn't worry one little bit about it, the whole reheated milk, egg, cheese and meat will be fine as if it wasn't they would serve it. You are only slightly more vulnerable to food poisoning when pregnant than when not so they just wouldn't serve it if there was even a slight risk.

I would take snacks though as i got hungry between meals and although the crew were excellent supplying me with big bottles of water and fruit i still wanted more!
