Has anyone experience with stemitol?

Diege · 13/11/2008 13:02

After many weeks of all day vomiting, GP has prescribed stemitol. Just wondering what people's experience of it was and if it helped nausea as well as vomiting? Am 8.5 weeks now and finding life very tough - am I placing too much hope that it will be a miracle cure?
Any experiences appreciated

Hi Diege, sorry you're having such a lot of trouble

I took stemetil suppositories as I couldn't have anything by mouth (felt too ill)

I am not sure how much they worked, hopefully a fair amount - it's hard to tell unless you are completely better, if you'd have been worse without them!

I think they stop you vomiting, not sure about the nausea, that was my main problem which is why I didn't find them a perfect solution.

I am not sure what works best for nausea. Maxolon was great - that's metoclopramide - it'[s a bit more hardcore so they are more reluctant to prescribe it. See how you go on these - hope they work, I really do feel for you xx

StealthPolarBear · 13/11/2008 13:09

i had a bad reaction to it (no long term problems though)
presume it's quite rare though

gooseegg · 13/11/2008 13:09

Stemetil, yes, I am allergic to it. It caused me extra pyramidal side effects including muscle spasms and tacchycardia.
I was 17 when it was given to me IV for a non pregnancy related condition. I think the risk of side effects may be increased in very young people.
It can be a very effective anti emetic if you don't have any allergies to it.
Hope it works for you. I can well remember the 24hr/day hell of early pregnancy nausea/vomiting.

Fllightthebluetouchpaper · 13/11/2008 13:12

I took it for a few weeks, no bad reaction.

StealthPolarBear · 13/11/2008 13:15

gooseegg, me too - was not in pg though so maybe dose is lower

Flight - doesn't sound like it applied to you anyway

Diege · 13/11/2008 13:46

Thanks ladies . Interesting to read about side effects. I am having problems keeping vits etc down and GP explained that these would dissolve under my tongue . Will be getting them tomorrow morning and will let you know how I get on

stemetil? I have had a history of vertigo (*severe case) and usually they prescribe me stemetil. This time around 16th week PG I had vertigo again, but GP said stemetil is not for pregnant women. are you sure you can take it? I did loads of research on interent too, and everywhere I saw it said; not for PG.

Minkus · 14/11/2008 18:08

i have been prescribed it during both my pregs, didn't work sadly but consultant said it wasn't designed to stop nausea just the vomiting. which continued until 31 weeks hence 2 stone weight loss! god luck though .

Fllightthebluetouchpaper · 14/11/2008 19:27

Rani it depends really, they tend to say that about a lot of drugs that just haven';t had the research done 'enough' to warrant an endorsement

doesn't mean they're not safe though

ds2 is fine and I used it a lot, he has one shortish toe but nothing else wrong with him

Fllightthebluetouchpaper · 14/11/2008 19:27

Minkus, did you find anything did work for the nausea?

artichokes · 14/11/2008 19:32

I found stemetil very effective for a non pregnancy related nausea I had.
They refused to prescribe it for my morning sickness.

bikerunski · 14/11/2008 20:29

I was hopsitalised with hyperemisis in first trimester and I was toggling stemitil jabs and metroclopromide. And tried another one that begins with C that made me hallucinate. DS is now nearly 10 weeks old and seems physically fine and bright as a button.

The sickness and nausea abated significantly after 14 weeks, and marmite and ice cubes seemed to help afterwards.

Ginger did nothing to help at all! (Although DS has ginger hair!)

I had maxolon for 2nd pregnancy, didn't do much vomited all the way through but it did give extremely restless legs (apparently it has effects if you weigh less than 8 stone).

Had stemitil for 3rd and 4th pregnancies. It didn't completely cure the vomiting/nausea but was more able to cope with it.

DS2 was born with 2 fingers joined together which may or may not have been caused by what I took in early pregnancy - I will never know. Was hospitalised and injected with god knows what - TBH I felt so bad I didn't even ask/care.

I think all these anti nausea/vomiting drugs are contra indicated in pregnancy because you cannot do drug testing on pregnant women - this was what my consultant told me but stemitil and maxalon are considered safe.

Hope you feel better soon.

babylove123 · 15/11/2008 15:21

they were a godsend to me! They were the 3rd medication i had tried on me for hyperemesis gravidarum. They didnt stop me being sick but certainly reduced it and i finally was weened off at 20 weeks (having lost 2 stone).

policywonk · 15/11/2008 15:25

I had Buccastem for a few days when I was HE, and it was utterly useless for me. Cyclizine was a bit more help. Neither stopped the nausea but cyclizine stopped the vomiting (mostly).

I think the key is to keep going back to the GP until you find something that makes you able to do the minimum (keep down water etc).

Sorry you're going through this - it's awful.

There's a HE website that's supposed to be very good - Blooming Awful.

Hi! Thanks for all your responses . Really good to know that I'm not the only one who suffers this way. Well at the moment I have the meds but haven't taken as yet. Got scared silly by some stupid googling saying to take only as last resort, so while my head says of course it's safe, just drug companies usual disclaimer, I'm a day off 9 weeks and will try and last it out a little longer. It worked ok-ish for my sister who took it all through her pregnancies, so if I'm still as bad come 12 weeks then yes will take.
Sickness usually eases up 11/12 weeks for me (started week 5). Someone tell me 2/3 more weeks is bearable??? Please???

AnnVan · 15/11/2008 17:43

Diege - hopefully you'll only have 2- 3 weeks left. I was severely ill till about 22 weeks. didn't find that stimitol helped much. but yes the time is bearable. just repeat 'this too will pass...' an you'll have a gorgeous LO to look forward to at the end of it all!

Diege · 16/11/2008 09:59

Thanks AnnVan. Agree, 2-3 weeks is bearable, and in fact feel a little better today. Am also cheered by fact that my 7 weeks scan (7.3 by dates) put me at 8 weeks, and while I am going by LMP for dating at the moment, could mean I'm nearer 10 weeks today than 9 so maybe closer to placenta taking over...Talk about clutching at straws...
Don't know how you and others cope with sickness beyond 1st trimester; think I would have to go into some sort of nursing home

babylove123 · 16/11/2008 14:03

stemitel is fine - i'm 39 weeks + 2 days and have a happy, healthy baby growing inside. I took it for 5 weeks and never had a problem. Of course i was extremely anxious about taking medication in pregnancy - was so worried about her but she was a strong bugger and was fine!

Minkus · 18/11/2008 15:51

bikerunski was it cyclizine that made you hallucinate? I think we may have discussed that one before- it did the same to me and I would look forward to my "cylizine dreams" even though it did buger all for the sickness!

Flightthebluetouchpaper- nothing "medical" worked for the nausea I'm afraid- although constantly eating murray mints for months 3-6 and then from months 6-9 non stop chewing blue wrigleys extra did make it more bearable, and seabands did help a bit when pg with ds2, but not with ds1.

Diege, make sure you get proper sleep as I recall being tired made it worse, and don't let your stomach ever ever be empty- even if it's only a spoonful of mashed potato every hour it will help. Chin up, hopefully it will go soon. I know how horrid it is so have a virtual pat on the shoulder and a cyber there-there!
