I am 11 weeks pregnant and last night I used a TENS machine on my bum cheek because I was getting shooting pains like Siatica that I had in my 1st Pregnancy- anyway read the instructions and there was no mention at all.. however went into Boots today to ask if there was anything I could use and casually mentioned I used a TENS machines, they scared the bejesus out of me.

Saying I shouldn't have used it until after 12 weeks etc. Rang my midwife and she didn't seem bothered at all but I am petrified something has happened.. I am not due for a scan until 17th and have already had a private scan...

Please tell me all will be well.. I only used it for 20 mins and could hardly feel it because of where it was .. lots of fat cushion!

I am sure it is fine - your mw was not worried. Boots don't want to get sued... The 'cushion' will help! Really - don't panic (there are too many other things to panic about!!) Its a scary time.

I'm pretty sure everthing will be fine.

You'll be fine and so will babe. Congratulations by the way! If there were a concern your MW would have told you. Really.
I don't think TENS machines carry enough of a current to harm a baby through all the cushioning of your glutes and spine and organs etc. You could always go into your midwife unit and ask them to try to locate the baby's heart beat using the doppler, to reassure you. It should be audible by 11 wks. (But please don't freak out if it isn't!!!)

I think that as for a lot of things there's no ethical way to test safety in pregnancy and it's advised against on precautionary grounds. try not to worry - I think Boots and your midwife are both right if that makes any sense!
