Does acupuncture work for severe morning sickness?

Am 6.5 weeks pregnant with no.4, and am suffering all day/night sickness. Was hospitalised with dds1 and 3, and trying my best to avoid going down the same route.
I have an acupuncture appointment scheduled for Saturday and was curious to hear about any experiences, good, bad, indifferent with acupuncture for sickness in pregnancy.
I am a little sceptical as acupressure bands don't work, and assume the same points will be used in acupuncture?
Many thanks

I had acupuncture for morning sickness, or rather endless nausea, as I wasn't actually sick. The results were good..didn't disappear completely but definately much improvement over 3 sessions.

MissyK · 30/10/2008 16:24

I had it twice a week over 8 weeks during my last pregnancy, it worked really well for me & my GP did it for me so I dodn't have to book elsewhere.

Wow that sounds encouraging . Can I ask where the needles go? I presume p6(?) pressure point a few inches below wrist crease? And does it hurt?

I was petrified the first time but honestly it was fine. Yes there was a single needle in each wrist, it didn't hurt at all, they were left in for around 20 minutes so I took the chance to lay back and relax
I woud have had it again this time round but luckily I didn't get so sick.
You should try it and see if it suits you

WobblyPig · 30/10/2008 19:31

Definitely -had it for 2 pregnancies. Don't delay it's the only thing IMO that actually makes any differnece.
I had 5-6 needles each time - points included wrists on both sides, between the oes, on the foot and on the shin.

Dispute the ' doesn't hurt' It did hurt me but was worth it.

£45 per session in London

Littlemisskiwi · 31/10/2008 02:19

hey
I had it at week 12 (2 sessions), week 14 (1 session) and again in week 18/19 (2 Sessions)
I found it really helped earlier on with the terrible nausea and it helps your emmotions too. Don't think the most recent sessions helped much more but I don't have ausea anymore, just vomitting occasionally.

I had needles on wrists, one in abdomen, toes, side of foot, shin and between eye brows. Definately recommend giving it a go!
good luck
I live in NZ and it cost $50

Thank you so much everyone . I am feeling quite down today as sickness is now totally debilitating day and night. It's cheered me a little knowing that there's some possibility of some respite (I am thinking more taking the egde off than completely gone).
Interesting to hear about where the needles go - will have a scrub of the old toes now that there might be one going in-between (ouch!)!

Diege, sympathies, I had it with ds (but not till about 20 weeks, when it was abating a bit) and it did help

a doula told me it was the most effective thing for ms

good luck

ps - have you tried the sniffing the fresj lemon?

Diege · 31/10/2008 12:01

Thanks DINNY Yes, have heard about lemon, but not tried it yet. The morning sickness roll-on thingy I have tried and it is hell - the most disgusting smell ever, ditto MorningWell CD that induced worst vomiting. I think I am wired wrong!

Ugh , I agree Diege about that roll-on morning sickness smelly thingy - absolutely gross. Even the thought of it makes me feel ill.
I took B6 supplements and ginger capsules which I think helped tone the nausea down a bit.
Good luck with the acupuncture - I tried to get it done a few wks ago for my m/s but struggled to find anybody locally that would do acupuncture on a pg lady because of 'insurance reasons' although I'm sure if I'd been willing to travel further afield I could have found someone.
Luckily my m/s had resolved itself by 9.5 wks ( give or take the odd 'wobbly' when I get hungry) so I've been forunate. (My last 2 pg's it lasted until 16wks with 1st baby then 12 wks with the 2nd one).
Let us know how you get on with it - I'm curious to hear if it is really helpful to you. Hope it works (and fast!)
Best of luck.

LOL FRAZZLE - I think they just lob a load of unpopular oils together and stick an £8 price sticker on it - truly repulsive .
Well, had first session this morning and am impressed. I do feel better, but was impressed too with the consultation before hand. Just by looking at my tongue and taking my pulse he could see that my body had too much heat in it, and that things like ginger would make me feel worse. I have been having lots of ginger, and bringing it all up, so that makes sense!
Have another session for next Sat, with one pencilled in for weds if things get worse (I think I'll have to stick to the one regardless as £36 a shot is a bit much twice a week for me).
After the session he showed me the red welts that came up on my wrists, which showed the heat coming out . I am open to anything that helps, and for now I do feel less nauseaus!

Ooh, I'm bumping this thread as I'm hoping to avoid feeling grim until week 20 this time round!

Any other opinions?
Has anyone had it and felt it did nothing?

LadyRose · 04/10/2010 20:02

going to get it tomorrow, as i am totally debilitated, and not functioning well at all (sorry husband, 2 kids and all my work collegues-who don't even know yet) feel like im on a x channel ferry. i will try/pay anything! at this current moment in time. Will let you know Thell.

LadyRose · 13/10/2010 11:29

so have had 3x sessions now. You have got to be more than o.k with needles! sounds obvious but she put needles in my wrists (between tendons on inside wrist)and the tops of my shins.

She then massaged my spleen.

It basically hurt, as she twiddled them but i think i feel better, still nauseous but much improved

Jenjen12 · 23/04/2012 12:52

Hi guys we are considering baby no 2 but I really scared of getting the m/s or should I say all night/day sickness that I suffered with DS. I think I have a phobia now of being sick. I have tried accupuncture before for other reasons and I did think it was good. I would definitely try it for the nausea this time if I pluck up the courage to have another!
