Hyperemesis, did you suffer from it every time you were pregnant?

Hi, my dh and I are considering having No.3 but I have suffered badly from hyperemesis during both of my other pregnancies. I ended up in hospital on a drip twice with dd and once with ds. Has anyone suffered with hyperemesis in one pregnancy and then gone on to have a happy healthy pregnancy? I really want No.3 but not sure I could cope with hyperemesis again especially as I'd have two other children to look after this time. Anyone offer me any hope?

I thankfully did not suffer with it during the 3rd, but she came out a girl and the first two had been boys. I don't know if that made the difference. It was a lovely pregnancy because I didnt have it! I don't think people really comprehend how awful having hyperemesis is. I was so glad only to have normal morning sickness!
There is hope, good luck!

Not with dd No1 but yes with this pregnancy no 2.......not due til March to see if it is a boy

There is NO WAY i would ever put my body through this again

Just as well we only want 2 children

Reallytired · 29/10/2008 20:58

I had morning sickness from hell with my son, but I haven't yet been sick with this one. Its really weird, infact I have already tested to see if I am still pregnant as I have not thrown up. Yet with my first pregnancy I was sick 5 to 10 times a day until I reached 36 weeks.

popadopalis · 29/10/2008 20:59

Yay! Thank you! I guess there's only one way to find out but the thought of being in that place again. I also had one of each and had it both times so maybe that's not so good? At least there is someone that has had it twice and not in the third pregnancy so it is possible for me to be fine. I wasn't sure if once you'd had it that was it for all pregnancies. Sorry I'm waffling but I'm just excited that there may be hope!

That's what I said, Lilymolly! Never again, I even wrote myself a note begging myself not to do it again but the hormones have kicked in and now I'm broody again.

My sister has had three pregnancies and suffered hypermesis in two of them. One was extreme and she was in hospital for an incredible 16 weeks, the other she was in an out a few times. Her first pregnancy she was fine though. I really do think each pregnancy is different. All three were girls.
I really feel for you because I witnessed how awful this condition is, it put my sister off getting pregnant for a long time though she wanted another child. It kind of took the excitement out of it for her as she spent the last pregnancy worried about how severe it would affect her this time round. Luckily the third time it was in a milder form.

Hi I have had three pregnancies and hyperemesis with all three, total nightmare. I used a website called www.bloomingawful.com. It is a forum like this but specifically for people with HG. The women on it are full of support, advice and some access to the latest information. My understanding of HG is it does return in every pregnancy but these other posts suggest maybe not. I have a girl and two boys and their gender made no diference to the severity of the HG. My baby is now nearly 6 months and the HG is fading into the background but you might want to prepare yourself e.g making sure childcare help is available for your other two, finding a sympathetic obstetrician. I sincerely hope it does not return for you. But if it does it may not be as severe and there is slightly more medication and help available now than previously. Lots of luck

Reallytired · 29/10/2008 21:14

I think that the severity of hypermesis is partly influenced by stress. With my first pregnancy I had a boss from hell, who made it clear that he thought that an employee getting pregnant was a serious lack of commitment. I was really badly bullied at work and possibly that contributed to the severe morning sickness.

My first pregnancy was so wretched it has taken me six years to think about concieving again. With my second pregnancy I have a lovely boss. I have had no nasty comments about getting pregnant.

There is a lady at my church who had hypermenisis with her daughter, but not with her sons. I am not sure how the sex of the child affects the severity of morning sickness.

It would be really interesting if someone did research into what causes hyperemisis and if there is anything that can be done to prevent it.

Thanks scifinerd. I guess I'd better face reality and make preparations for if it does occour again if I go ahead and get pregnant. Knowing me I probably will as I really want No.3! Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

There has been research into hypremesis. I know of one consultant at St Thomas's in London who has been researching it. Also I don't know what area you are from popadopalis but if it is london I could recommend some people. I personally found that a sympathetic dr was essential. HG affects you mentally and physically. So I do agree that stress can make it worse but I also believe it is a physiological condition. Another great link that has access to a lot of research is the American website www.hyperemesis.org. It is a fantastic resource, shame it isn't UK based. America is much further forward with this condition than the UK. Also I know many women don't want to take medicene when pregnant but sometimes there is no choice and the drug ondensatron is being prescribed for HG more and more but many drs won't mention it as it is expensive. I tried it to little avail but many HG mums have found it a lifesaver. If I think of any other help I will post again. Finally I really really wanted a 3rd child and despite it being my worst pregnancy I dont regret it for a second. I just kept telling myself "this is the last time I will feel like this". Of course now it is a memory I am brooding about no 4 but DP will run away so think I better not ha ha

Anotherbook · 29/10/2008 21:32

I had hyperemesis in all my pregnancies (including miscarriage)- 2nd worst..

I do think it tends to reoccur (because it did with me!) and really prepared for my third using this site for help (diet pre conception, medication on first sickness symptoms,GP and consultant pre planning).I did still get it but not as badly as my second.Good luck!

popadopalis · 29/10/2008 21:32

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who changes their mind once the memory fades! I was beginning to feel like I was being irresponsible or silly because of everyone's reactions to me. If it weren't for the sickness and the lack of finances I would happily reproduce until the end of time! I'd love abig brood but my dh would also run a mile if I mentioned anymore than 3! I originally wanted 4 and he wanted 2 so 3 is our compromise although he is concerned about putting me through it all again. Thanks for the links.

I had hyperemesis in six pregnancies. Less so in the last one, who was a different sex to the others. I really do think that some women carry boys well, some girls. I hope you find the support you need. It's a big decision to make but you are v sensible to expect it and then if it isn't so bad...happy days! Good luck!

popadopalis · 29/10/2008 21:37

Thaks Anotherbook. I'll check that out. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to ease it a little if I did get it again. I'm thinking it's most likely that I will so anything that will help I will try as I'm sure you can understand!

Its definately a physiological condition and the affects are quite devestating whatever causes it. Hypermensis is real.

At the start of my pregnancy I weighed 59kg and just after I had given birth I weighed 47kg. I looked and felt absolutely terrible. I am quite tall (5ft 6") and I was not over weight before my pregnancy.

I wonder if the stress I was under during my first pregnancy acted as a trigger. Almost in the same way that extreme stress can trigger an attack of psoriasis or ezcema.

Littlemisskiwi · 31/10/2008 02:31

Hi

I'm 20 weeks now with DC1 and had HG from week 9 - 14 but didnt loose weight. I know that I've not been as bad as some of you poor ladies.
I'm still sick and so very exhausted from the strain of trying to cope and fearing it getting worse. I don't think I will ever want to be pregnant again. I hope I remember how hard it has been, but DH and I always talked of having two...

MrsMattie · 31/10/2008 04:45

No with no.1, but terribly with no.2. I don't think I could go through it again
