8 weeks pregnant and fed some sheep. Help!

I'm having a bit of a panic. I am nearly 8 weeks pregnant and have just taken my DS to a community farm. As we walked round I saw a sign (not anywhere near the sheep!) saying pregnant women should not feed the sheep.

Can anyone shed some light? I'm assuming there is a risk of infection/miscarriage.

Thank you ever so much

Did you wash your hands? These places usually provide sinks with hot water and soap.

There is a risk of infection/miscarriage.

as long as you washed your hands well, you should be fine. This is a relatively new addition to the "how to scare pregnant women" list.

I am sure that many prgnant women have fed sheep in the past and not caught anything

(my humble opiion of course - obviously I am not a MW or health professional - check with them if you are really anious)

I though it was lambs or pregnant sheep, but not entirely sure.

ShowOfHands · 25/10/2008 11:27

The risk is during lambing season I believe (live on a farm with sheep). I know the climate's up the swanny but it isn't lambing season atm.

Sure somebody else can clarify the matter.

Hang on, actually...

Here, it is lambing season that's the issue

ShowOfHands · 25/10/2008 11:30

Confirmation from NHS Direct

Lambing season is January to April afaik.

Please don't worry.

please don't worry.

The risk from sheep is definitely at lambing time - particularly coming into contact with birthing fluids and newborn lambs. You are most definitely not at any risk from this.

Thank you all for your responses.I feel much better. I washed my hands obsessivly while I was there and again when I got home! And thank you ShowofHands for your links. They were really helpful.

I'll breath again!

The risk from sheep is when they are pregnant not just at lambing time now is the time that the rams start going in with the ewes.
