Gaviscon

I know it says on the bottle that it's safe to have Gaviscon, but I seem to be having about 3 spoonfuls every evening, and sometimes a tablet after lunch. I'm wondering whether it's something which they say is 'safe' but probably best avoided - what does everyone think? I do try to wait until I can't stand it anymore but should I just be putting up with heartburn?

well some people end up swigging from the bottle in an effort to stop the heartburn so I think you're pretty restrained! Check with your mw if you're worried.

lauraloola · 21/10/2008 17:10

I drank from the bottle!! Most nights infact.

EsmeWeatherwax · 21/10/2008 17:24

I drank it from the bottle all through my last pregnancy, and have just been prescribed a huge bottle of it from my doctor this morning. (I'm pg again, btw) Blessed relief.

jellybeans · 21/10/2008 17:26

I take maximum dose which is a couple spoons after every meal and often in the night too. Didn't do any harm in my last pregnany either and did the same. It's horrible, I am up all night with it x

Another swigger. I used to drink it from a shot glass after meals sometimes. The agony of real heartburn is indescribable until you've suffered.

Minniethemoocher · 22/10/2008 09:24

I take 2 teaspoons every night, I am 38 weeks pregnant and experienced heartburn for the first time this week and it was dreadfully painful!!

mrsmontano · 22/10/2008 10:16

my dr said I can have as much as I like, as often as I need. It's safe.
I drink from the bottle too

mrsmontano · 22/10/2008 10:25

forgot to add....
don't just put up with it untill you cant stand it any longer, because you're then letting the stomache acid burn and irritate your esophagus uneccessarily, which just leads to more pain and worse heartburn later.

mamaspanx · 22/10/2008 10:29

blimey my doctor wont prescribe it because you can buy it at the local chemist and don't you know the nhs is in crisis??? bastard... its bloody expensive i have to buy the generic one

EsmeWeatherwax · 22/10/2008 11:21

I was quite surprised when the doctor prescribed it for me tbh. I hadn't asked for it, she just said she'd give me a prescription for omeprazole and some gaviscon, and would I like peppermint or aniseed flavour.

weecarol · 22/10/2008 13:16

My heartburn is so bad at times I would be lost without my gaviscon! The only way to drink it while pregnant is straight from the bottle
Have it on repeat prescription at the moment, 36+3 & had horrific heartburn since 16 weeks! So bad that along with my SPD it had kept me awake at night and caused me to be sick on so many occasions.
I never go anywhere now without it.

My DP says sometimes I swig it like it's water

berri · 22/10/2008 13:21

LOL - Another bottle swigger signing in!!

No1GruffaloHunter · 22/10/2008 14:59

My M/W gives me a prescription for it. TBH I don't know how I'd survive / eat anything without it.

BTW you can buy the Advance from the Pharmacy but its about twice as expensive as the normal stuff. Much more effective though. Still shocked at your GP for not giving you it on prescription.

Playdough · 22/10/2008 15:08

I think the only argument I've heard against unlimited consumption is that the body gets used to having it and produces more acid ... not sure if that is an old wives tale or not. My midwife said also to try not to bend over (!) and to drink lots of peppermint tea (along with your raspberry leaf, leading to endless toilet trips!). Having said that, sometimes only Gavascon can do it! Good luck. My heartburn was really bad in the middle trimester and then, for some reason completely went away around 30 weeks ... but I am 'carrying low', as they say.

brookeslay · 22/10/2008 15:13

hands around gaviscon from her hip flask. I`m still sick at 21 weeks. If i have spicy food, anything too sweet or travelling. It stays with me alot
