Not sure but bumping this for you. I thought it was if the baby came into contact with your blood so it may be wise to have one.

I'm pretty sure the bacteria resides in the vagina so no need if having a section, however may be best to check with midwife/doctor/gbs website. Can't remember the name but I found it by googling GBS I think.

Just googled it as I am curious now - On the GBS website it says you should still be tested if you are having a c section as the infection could still be passed on.

If you are positive, you may want to check in advance what your hospital's policy on observations for the baby is. (4 hourly usually for 24 or 48 hours - just so you have an idea of what will be happening during your stay there.)

It can be passed on - I'm currently debating whether to have the test and I'm booked in for an elective at 39 weeks.

i had my consultant appointment today (c-section is booked for 4 weeks!!) and she did not think it necessary for me to have the gbs test...

It is possible (but unlikely) for it to be passed on. At our hospital they don't take the risk. I was found to be positive after I had the c-section, and they didn't even wait for the test results for my daughter to come back, they just started her on anti-biotics straight away. Having the anti-biotics yourself before the c-section is fair less painfull then holding down your 3 day old baby while a doctor puts a canular in. They will always say its not necessary to test because they don't test unless they have a reason to, but I think if you request a test they will give you one.
