Work trips at 11 and 14 weeks pregnant?

Hi Everyone, I'd be so grateful for some advice, everyone is telling me different things...I have two trips coming up with work, one to Greece (4 days) and one to various cities in Germany and Poland (10 days). I'll have to take both a suitcase and an exhibition stand for me, and on the second trip I'll be travelling to a new city every night which will be pretty tiring. By the first trip I'll be 11 weeks pregnant, and 14 weeks by the second one. I was feeling okay about the trips until my boss suggested it might not be a great idea for me to go now I'm pregnant(not that there's anyone else who can go...!). I asked my mum what she thought, and she said that you should carry on as normal when you're pregnant. But then when I asked her if she'd go if she was me, she said no! Anyway, ramble over. Basically I don't care if I'm tired on the trips, as long as the baby is okay. What do you think?

I would say you should be fine..as long as you are over the morning sickness for teh first.

i was very tired when i was 11 and 14 weeks pregnant and i am not one for travelling normally let alone pregnant.
i problably wouldnt go either.

If you are well there is no reason not to go. Being pregnant shouldn't affect your life especially at this early stage. Unless of course you want to use it as an excuse not to go

monkeymonkeymonkey · 08/10/2008 18:51

I think that there isnt any reason not to go, if you can manage. It wont do the baby any harm. Going on the trips now might buy you a bot of goodwill if things are harder later on and you do want to cut back.

Thanks for your replies, everyone, you're so fast! Feel a bit better about it now. There is someone going with me (forgot to say) - she'll be doing different stuff unfortunately so I can't palm my work off on her Decisions, decisions...it's the carrying stuff more than the travelling that's worrying me to be honest, though I would be packing as light as possible...

I went on a work trip to the US when 12 weeks pg and it was fine.

Yes i was tired but would have been tired at home! Also quite good not being able to drink as it meant I didn't try to burn the candle at both ends. Can check with doc but afaik it shouldn't affect baby at all.

OneLieIn · 08/10/2008 19:03

I travelled extensively when pg and was fine. You might feel more tired than normal that is all.

Agree with monkey about doing the work now will pay dividends later.

Perhaps you can minimise the carrying stuff by using those trolley things at the airport and if you get cabs ask the drivers to take your bags in and out of places maybe?x

Mhairi100 · 08/10/2008 19:09

Thanks AnybodyHome and OneLieIn! Good to hear from others who have done it and been fine. And it is a good point re getting brownie points with work that I might need later

If you feel fit and well...go for it.
Ask for help to carry things and do try and get early nights and room service when you can.

Me - I'm spending my days with my head down the toilet, and suffered horrific MS on a month long business trip at the start of my PG, so wouldn't thank anyone for sending me away again!

Good luck!

Whyd don't you pick up some wheels to fix to your suitcase/other heavy loads? Have a look here

I found out I was pg 6 hours before getting on work flight to Ethiopia where I was flat out for just over 2 weeks. Still not sure how my little bean managed to implant while I was bumping down potholed roads for 4 hours a day!!

My doctor told me that there's nothing you can do to stop yourself being pregnant and I really think that carrying on as normal, as much as possible, is the way forward - I wouldn't want opportunities taken away because I'm pg so I reckon it has to work both ways...

Also agree that doing the work now will pay dividends later... you will be showing your commitment and that won't be forgotten.

Have fun!!! x
