Waters broke at 27 weeks

I have just had a call from my friends husband to say her waters broke on sunday & she was just 27+4 weeks. She is now 28+1weeks & is on the delivery suite , naturally her husband is very worried. They wouldn't let her eat last night in case she needed to have a c-section , as far as i know she is contracting but not dilating , he says the baby will be born , possibly today. Does anyone have any encouragement or positive stories of babies born this early to put a worried husband & friends mind at rest please.

Aww that is a great weight! Sending good luck vibes to all of them!

2lbs 10oz is a great weight for 28 weeks, that is a real start. Also since she managed to hang on for a few days the injections for maturing the lungs will have had time to work. My dd was 1lb 12oz at birth and I know there are some smaller ones on MN (I only rank 4th smallest ) and she is great. Good luck to your friend, it will be a long 12 weeks before he comes homes

I am going insane now , i can't reach my friends dh , but he spoken to my dh. He's told him the hospital have said the baby has an 85% chance which is great , though i still don't know how the baby is , or how my friend is feeling. I know the baby is not in an incubator & my dh says it's because he's in intensive care , but what does this mean?? Why are men so vague with information & details

He might be cling-filmed right now rather than in an incubator....don't ask me why I just know they do surround them with cling film sometimes if they're very early (not sure if this will be the case and I don't think it means anything either way, as it's just like an incubator!)

fastasleep · 04/03/2005 18:59

(I think the cling film thing is an American thing! Lol) 85% is fantastic! I'm sure everything will go very well for their little boy!

coldtea · 04/03/2005 19:01

I can speak to her mum but since she hasn't been to the hospital yet the only information we are receiving is the information coming from my friends dh. I know i'll feel a lot happier once i've been & seen my friend. Fingers crossed i can go tomorrow.

DT1 was in open incubator it doesn't have any sides because they need more intensive treatment than the ones in incubators

It made it easier to get to for the Doctors etc.

DT2 was in an incubator because he wasn't so ill

When we took DT2 {DS} back to visit where they had been as a baby ITU NNU we saw some babies in plastic bags and they were the ones who couldn't control their temperature at all it was also very humid for them too.

So IMHO her baby will be in an open incubator

The heat is regulated and has a heater on the top like a 3 bar electric fire.

Crossed posts lockets my typ is so slow tonight

But that is what I think anyway hope he gets stronger soon

btw sometimes they call these open incubators = cots

but they do not mean the same as SCBU or postnatal cots.

I really appreciate everything you've told me. I'll make sure i let her know she has lots of virtual support . Forgot to say , she could be out this weekend? Will keep you updated , it's nice to talk to people who have been through similar experiences. Will have to recommend MN to her for when she's out.

Sorry it's taken me till now to let you know what is happening. My dd jumped on the mouse lead which buckled the pins in the end so i've not been able to use the computer

I finally got to see her sat & they are both doing really well.
The hospital actually asked her if her dates were correct as the baby is doing so well. They were able to take his tube for breathing away on the first day & while i was at the hospital they showed us that he has a sucking reflex which they would not expect from a 28wk gestation baby , this means they can feed him. They had to give him a bottle to begin with as the m/w wasn't happy the colour of the milk she expressed.
They have however warned her that not every day will as positive as it is at the moment but if he continues like this he won't have to stay in till his due date!

She came home last night & is feeling positive as she is now able to express milk for him. I've told her she has plenty of people thinking of her . thank you
