Visual disturbances @ 40 weeks

Has anyone else experienced visual disturbances whilst heavily pregnant?

Yesterday and today I've had blurry vision for a while, which was only sorted out by having something to eat.

I have gestational diabetes (diet controlled), but my blood sugars, whilst at the low end of normal for me, were only at 'normal' levels for a non diabetic.

Just wondering if it's likely to be as simple as GD related, or if there's anything else that it could be that I should be more concerned about.

I would call your mw as it can be an early sign of preclampsea, probably nothign but do just check.

CSWS - it's something that you need to see your GP or midwife about. It could be GD related or blood pressure related, and these things need to be checked.

Or it could be something very simple - I get visual disturbances called opthalmic migraines that are related to bright lights, tiredness and hormones. In my case it's nothing serious but I've had full check up anyway.

So please get it checked out!

go to your midwife please, you should be assessed for pre-eclampsia.

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/10/2008 08:54

Am seeing midwife tomorrow morning - do you reckon it can safely wait until then?

I had a checkup on Monday and everything was fine then. BP has been around 100/65 throughout entire pregnancy, and apart from the GD the whole pregnancy has been quite straightforward.

I would phone your midwife today, especially as you have been experiencing the disturbances for two days.

LilRedWG · 02/10/2008 08:56

Give your midwife a call this morning and see what she thinks - she may want you checked out today. In the meantime, put your feet up and relax.

ronshar · 02/10/2008 08:57

CSWS, has your GP surgery got a BP machine in the waiting room? You could just pop in take your BP and then make a decision to bring forward your Midwife appointment! You know what the nornal range should be.

rempy · 02/10/2008 08:57

No, please cantleepwontsleep, phone now. Preeclampsia can occur and progress very quickly. You must discuss this with a health care professional who is responsible for your care this morning. They will be in a better position to say what to do for you.

I dont want to scare you, I am a doctor, and as such always see the worst case scenario. Im sure its nothing but it needs action now.

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/10/2008 08:59

Ok thanks ladies. Will give m/w a call this morning and see what she thinks.

Have spoken to midwife. She says not likely to be diabetes related, as it would be high rather than low blood sugars causing something like this. She wasn't worried though, as I have no other signs of PE at all, but said by all means to get my community midwife to check BP when I see her tomorrow.

glad you've spoken to your midwife. If I were you I would rest and eat regularly today.

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/10/2008 13:49

Are you aware of the other signs of pre-eclampsia? Just so you know what to watch out for.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 02/10/2008 14:03

Ah...so I'm not completely bonkers then

Visual disturbances can be quite common for a number of reasons but PE is definitely the most worrying reason.

Sit with your feet up as much as possible. Relax as much as possible. (Hard to do with a toddler I know!)

LackaDAISYcal · 02/10/2008 14:06

hope it settles down for you CSWS...and Good Luck for Monday

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/10/2008 14:24

S'ok vvv - am off to Swedes' house to bake cakes with the dds this afternoon, so shouldn't be too stressful.

Looked up the rest of the symptoms this morning NJ, so yes, am aware now.

How are you this morning?

loveverona · 03/10/2008 09:36

Hi CSWS. I had this with my DS and it was migraine brought on by pregnancy, but without the headache. I'd have visual disturbance for about 20 minutes then slurred/confused speech for about 5 minutes, then it would go. Had one the minute my son was born then never again since. MW was concerned about PE as mentioned here before, so I'd definitely get it checked to be safe. Good luck.

loveverona · 03/10/2008 09:37

Meant to add, I only had this about 4-5 times throughout the last 3-4 months of the pregnancy.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/10/2008 09:49

Fine today thanks NJ . No more visual probs since first thing yesterday. No bloody sign of labour either though .

Off for another sweep this morning, so will take urine sample and get her to check BP just in case, but not expecting it to show anything sinister.
