grrr. 34 weeks and went to the midwife today. when she was feeling around for the baby, she assumed that it was my second baby. When I said it was my first she acted surprised, she said the muscle tone was that of someone having a second baby and that I'd have a lot of work to do after the baby's born because I'll have a pretty loose flabby belly.

Double grrr! She also registered surprise that I'd had a reasonably flat-ish stomach before getting pregnant.

I've not put weight on anywhere during the pregnancy that I can tell and, to me, the bump is a biological phenomenon in the way that it manages to stand out from the rest of my body all on its own. It's really neat, to my eyes.

Advice? Help? Is there anything I can do to improve muscle tone in late pregnancy? Am I doomed to be tucking my loose hanging stomach into my jeans forevermore? Should I go back to the surgery and pull her hair out?

Pull her hair out!
I can't believe she said that to you - totally unnecessary and untrue!

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 30/09/2008 13:03

Gosh how rude!!!!

Tommy · 30/09/2008 13:05

what a load of tosh - she shouldn't say things like that - how would she know?! Silly moo (and rude too)

Szyslak · 30/09/2008 13:09

Wow these midwives are physic now too!!

ignore her, see waht happens, it's an opinion, probably based on not much, and another midwife would say saomthing totally differnt.

She does not knwo.

MrsMattie · 30/09/2008 13:12

OMG. What a cow. How is that relevant? Unless it's of medical significance? I don't blame you for feeling upset.

Fwiw, I put on shed loads of weight with my last pregnancy. I lost it eventually. You will, too. But you certainly don't need to be thinking about exercise regimes and weight loss while you're still pregnant!

The best thing you can do for your body now (apart from rest) is to do your pelvic floor exercises. It will start to tone up those important muscles around your pelvic girdle so that when you do feel ready to start exercising after the birth you will already have a head start.

Do you have to see the same midwife again? I hope not. She sounds vile.

SpinsterinScotland · 30/09/2008 13:39

She sounds like a charmer!

FWIW I was told my a couple of midwives that I had amazing stomach muscles. I;ve never had an especially flat tummy even when I was very slim, , although I am very fit, so I found this surprising.

I gained a lot of wieght during pregnacny and ended up with a pretty flabby tummy after - even though I have now lost wieght and still exercise.

So my point is I was told the exact opposite of what your mid wife has told you and ended up with a flabby belly so there is every chance you will end up with a flat one IYSWIM.

Just concentrate on growing a healthy baby and try not to see that midwife again!

Oh jesus I hope you replied as long as I don't look like a bulldog licking piss off a thistle afterwards we'll be ok, you diggy?

lauraloola · 30/09/2008 13:45

How rude. I am guessing she is fat and was v.jealous that you actually wont have a jelly belly. I bet she had Spanx on to hide her sins

PinkTulips · 30/09/2008 13:53

the physio exclaimed about my rear end the other day 'oh god, that bum is very soft. you really have no muscle tone at all'

well dp likes it so sod you, you fit little childless cow

kraftwerkkittie · 30/09/2008 14:23

heh. you guys rock. she was very skinny, but, you're right, it probably IS a complicated system of Spanx and medieval corsetry.

Well I feel better now. No idea why she felt the need to tell me it in the first place, and to be so shruggy-shouldered about it. when i asked if there was anything i could do to bump up the muscle tone she just smiled and said "no"

err... thanks.

She does sound vile but were her comments anything to do with absence of stretch marks by any chance? Just wondering because I didn't have any ... I just stretched ....

kraftwerkkittie · 30/09/2008 14:48

alas no! i spotted my first stretch marks last week. they could have been there for ages but they're on the underside of the bump where i couldn't see em...

Oh well, I'd just ignore her then ... I really would ....everyone bounces back in a different way ...her comments don't sound exactly scientific ....
