Nuchal Scan!!

Have I done the right thing, please help!! I had a nuchal scan because of my age of being nearly 40 - had a good result with 1:1500!

I know this sounds silly but my two previous pregnancies have had amnio's cos my AFP bloods have always come back high risk 1:100, so this time I didn't bother with amnio because of my good odds, but I still can't stop worrying whether I've done the right thing, and should I have opted for an amnio anyway!

Has anyone else been the same sort of thing, any advice would be welcome....

hi, how many weeks are you now?

i am 42 yrs and 23 weeks with my 2nd. i had nuchal at 11weeks and the odds were very good like yours. but i still went ahead and had a CVS cos i wanted to be 100% sure.

is it too late for amnio for you?

PoppyMorgan · 29/09/2008 15:12

I'm 25 weeks now, so too late now unfortunately, I just went with what the lady said at the nuchal scan and consultant! But to be honest I wish I did now, can't stop fretting!!

Was the result the one you hoped for Heron?

Poppymorgan,
I have had a similar situation - I had an amnio last time aged 35 (good nuchal but bad blood results) so I fully expected to have a CVS this time (age 39). However combined results came back good so i just couldnt justify the risk. There is of course that element of doubt that i didnt have to live with last time but the fact is that there was nothing showing up on the scan that raised any concern and this time the bloods were much better too. So I am just hanging on in there til 20 weeks and hoping i made the right decision!

1 in 1500 is very good so really there is so little chance of there being a problem. Try not to worry...

PoppyMorgan · 29/09/2008 16:36

Thanks jasperc163, I'm trying not to worry but just hope I made the right decision, didn't want to risk a miscarriage cos I couldn't go through with it again.

When I had my nuchal done my bloods came back high risk 1:88 but with the scan came back 1:1500 - just keeping my fingers crossed! I'm now 25 weeks had my big scan and everything seemed ok....

I know there are exceptions but I think usually if there is a problem something shows up at the 20 week scan? I will certainly be more relaxed once I've had this..

tbh i set far more store by the nuchal - the bloods freaked me out last time and were the reason for me having the amnio (nightmare as they botched it and had to stick the needle in twice!). They look for so many different markers now on the nuchal - it is certainly what has given me the confidence not to have the CVS (rather than the bloods).

A friend of mine got a risk of 1 in 5 (combined nuchal and bloods but bloods worse) a few months back and did have a CVS. All absolutely fine.

PoppyMorgan · 30/09/2008 12:29

Thats what I think, I did feel confident having the nuchal done, there's just a part of me that worries!! Born warrior me, having a 4d scan scan done in a few weeks so that will relax me more if everything ok I think!

God 1 in 5 she must have been out of her mind with worry! My best mate had risk of 1:120 in February and turned out it was down's she was devastated and it was the daughter she always wanted, but didn't go ahead, so that doesn't help me tbh!!

poppymorgan, that was quite a good result following your nuchal. I'm 40 and had a nuchal scan at 12 weeks (almost 19 now) have 3 other children and not offered it before so a bit stressed by it all. At start of nuchal they gave me a 1:67 (as I'm an old hag no doubt!) but afterwards they changed it to 1:1107. On this basis I decided against cvs/amnio due to risk of miscarriage (having already had one and having had early bleeding with this one). Your result is better than mine so no reason to worry unnecessarily about whether you should have had more tests. Try to relax and not stress about it and enjoy your pregnancy.

PoppyMorgan · 30/09/2008 13:41

thanks mumoverseas, its just my best mate had an amnio recently due to her AFP blood results being 1:120 and it turned out to be downs, just makes me a born worrier!!

I'm trying to relax though and enjoy it....

Hi PoppyMorgan, Another Poppy here - (although I keep spelling it Poopy for some reason). 1:1500 is a fantastic result - anyone analysing that would say you've got it as low as it can probably go for your age. I would be really happy with that - well I am.

I am 43 and my risk went down from 1:36 (which is the age-calibrated background risk methinks) to 1:1200 at my scan 6 weeks ago. I am very happy with that and my consultant said that was about as good as it can get. I didn't consider a CVS or amnio.

Same with last year's dd1 scan - that was 1:1000 after the scan. Seems fine to me and she was just that.

I can understand that you're worried since you've done amnios for your previous ones, so that's almost become 'the way you do things' but your scan results really are good, and I think possibly someone - a doctor perhaps? - could have done a bit more reassuring for you. I say well done old girl!

Best of luck,

Poppy

Thanks PoppyField, glad everything worked out for you, I'm sure I'm fine just want it over now to be honest, so I know he's fine and healthy.

Its hard work being pregnant, I'm so hormonal
