Head cold! What can I take - anything?

Hi
I am nearly 24 weeks pg and have a horrible head cold. I thought I would just have some lemsip or something, but it says to consult a doctor on the pack if you are pg. I know a lot of these companies put this on the packet to cover their own backs, but just wondered if anyone else had taken any 'cold' medicine? And which ones do you recommend.
Thanks!

prob not what you want to hear, but when i had a cold a few weeks ago i took nothing. Like you, everything seemed to have refered to a GP on it. I have to say its probarly just me err-ing on the side of caution - think your largley right when you say they're covering their backs. When i went to see my Doctor about something else, he said Paracetomol is very safe in pregnancy for any niggles. That will help with pain, not sure about the symptoms though.

Perhaps stock up on Orange juice, but god knows there is prob a reason why we can't have OJ too ....

You must be due in jan? havent seen you on the due in jan 09 thread? unless you've changed your name!!!

Hi, I have been drinking hot robinsons squash to make it feel like a hot lemsip lol! Have taken paracetamol, but that's it really. Guess I will have to ride it out!

I am due Jan 22nd, ooh will look for jan 09 thread! Is that when you are due?

I went to Boots with a terrible cough/cold recently (am 11 wks pg) and begged them for something...but the pharmacist said there was nothing I could have! The best she could do was glycerol cough sweets! So I really hope you feel better soon, keep up the hot drinks.

rrrayray · 29/09/2008 14:48

I'm due on the 20th January!

I'll put a link, but if it doesn't work.... its under antenatal clubs.

cold relief stuff only contains paracetamol, decongestant and sometimes caffiene and ime don't really do much at all

You can get decongestant relief by steaming head over bowl and/or drinking hot blackcurrant/any squash drink/hot water/hot water with honey and lemon in and/or having a nice warm bath

normal paracetamol will help with any aches and reduce any fever and coffee for caffeine and resting as much as you can. Get the tissues with balm in to help with sore lips and nose and some nice lip salve or vaseline. Up your vitC too

Colds are horrid, hope you feel better soon

Thanks scaredoflove will do all of above, it makes you feel so tired when you feel like this too, especailly first thing in the morning, think I will get an early nite tonight as I have to be at work for 7am.

Isn't paracetomal the only active ingrediant in lemsip? Paracetomal is fine in pregnancy, although having said that I tend to suffer rather than take it myself. With my first pg I was prescribed morphine because of the huge amount of pain I was in. I refused to take it because of what it 'might do to the baby' and the doctor wasn't impressed and said they wouldn't give me anything that would harm the baby. I suppose at the end of the day it depends how bad you feel and how worried you are about the effects on the baby.

Hi

I had a horrid cold last week and went looking for advice - Olbas Oil on the pillow at night plus drinking lots of water helped me loads.

Some good ideas here

boolean · 29/09/2008 15:20

You can take paracetemol safely in pregnancy but it's not always the best thing for a cold if you're feeling sinus-y. I would kill for a Sudafed right now, but inhaling from a steamy hot bowl of water with a few drops of tea tree oil will have to do!

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 29/09/2008 21:19

I thought Paracetamol was only ingredient too, but looking at the pack there are other things in there - like decongenstants, and other things which help 'keep you alert', I suppose like caffeine!
Never thought of Olbas oil, will try that I think!
