I had a miscarriage back in Feb and was told that when I got pregnant again I could request an early scan but I can't remeber when they said was best. Think it is was eight weeks, does that sound about right or do you think they will ask me to wait longer.

when i went to drs first and they sent me to midwife they sent me straight away from there to hosp for early scan ..so probably around 6 weeks for me

8 weeks sounds about right. As by 8 weeks you should expect to see a heartbeat. But if you go earlier and don't see a heartbeat, then that doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong, but would get you stressed.

I've been told by my Early Pregnancy Unit to ask GP to book me an 8-week scan. Seeing GP this week.

Do you have an EPU near you that you can ring for advice? They seem very willing to talk & will probably be able to tell you what you need to do in your area.

Hi Champagneforlunch, i has a MMC in july and was told by my GP that i could go for an earyl scan anytime after 8 weeks when preganant again. She also advised me not to go any earlier as its not always possible to detect a hearbeat earlier than 8 weeks. Im still TTC but will definatly want an earyl sacn to put my mind at rest.
Wishing you lots of luck

I had early scans with EPU and they were at 8 weeks but I phoned earlier to arrange them in advance. Good luck with your pregnancy.

Champagneforlunch · 29/09/2008 12:27

Thanks for the quick replies. Thought 8 weeks sounded right as last time I had a scan at 5 1/2 that didn't show a heartbeat and was told to come back two weeks later.
It was the local epu that I was under last time and it was them that suggested the early scan, they were really nice even coming to see me after I had the surgery to see if I was ok. They just advised me to phone them direct I don't even have to through my GP (I'm pretty sure my gp confirmed this) but still might go see him tomorrow to confirm I'm not imagining the lines on the pregnancy tests..

I have been given one at 6wks for what turned out to be a successful pregnancy after a 12wk mc.
but since I have had 2 pregnancies resulting in mc but were the gp refused to send for early scan, here there are no self referrals to EPU.

I had in mind going privately well into 8wks, for the higher chance of heart beat.
as it turned out both ended in mc just on 8wks give or take a day or 2.

best wishes for you hope all goes well

I'm just hoping they haven't changed there policies since feb, it seems like such a long time ago, and I can still get this scan. Although my Gp would proably refer me now (I'm only about 5 weeks gone) if I asked as I've been getting pains in my lower side for the last few days.
It's a bit sad thinking that I could have been worried about sleepless nights and nappies rather than scans at the moment.

Be warned - My EPU classes any scan over 8 weeks as your dating scan so you forfit your 12 week one. I know its been the same for several of my friends dotted about the country too so it might be worth clarifying the situation before you book your early scan

I paid for a private one this time ( after 2 8 week mc and a mmc at 13 weeks where the baby died at 8 ) because my EPU wouldnt give me an extra reassurance scan.

It cost £70 and was fantastic, i had it at 9 weeks

Could you do that ?

Good Luck

CookieMonster2 · 29/09/2008 15:19

Before you pay for a private scan it might be worth asking your midwife to see if they can find the heart beat using a doppler. I didn't ask for a reassurance scan after previous mc as I decided it wasn't worth the stress, but the midwife managed to find a heart beat at 9 weeks. I felt a lot happier from then until the 12 week scan. I appreciate that they can't always find it that early, so maybe you could get the private scan once you have tried that?

Champagneforlunch · 29/09/2008 16:07

I will check that before arrange the scan. I had and early scan with dd which must have been about eight weeks and still had a twelve week scan with her but that was five years ago now. The local epu also doesn't use a big ultrasound machine like they do in the main ultrasound dept so don't know if they would do the dating scan there.
I don't know if anyone does provate scans near here but do really like the idea of the 3d scans, might see if I can get the early scan and if I don't get a 12 week scan wait and get a 3d scan instead.

I found an eight week scan very reassuring, but I still needed the 12 week scan to stop feeling worried.

Champagneforlunch · 30/09/2008 11:37

Went to the doctors this morning, unrelated issue really as have an ear infection that won't clear up, working in call centre needed more time off work and my line had run out. Told him about the pregnancy and he booked me straight in for a scan on Thursday. Feel a bit easier knowing I'm not expecting to see a heartbeat and will need to come back but will hopefully ease the worry over what the pains in my side are.
