Really enjoying drinking mint tea and seems to help with the nausea. Is it actually OK? I have a niggly little feeling that I may have heard that it's best to avoid it.

yes it's fine. as a rough rule, any herb/spice that is fine in cooking will be fine as a tea.

Aubergenie · 29/09/2008 07:51

Not sure about earlier on - I drank it from time to time and baby seems fine (due tomorrow) - but I was told by a doula that peppermint tea should be avoided in the later stages of pregnancy as it prevents the milk from coming in.

Cheers chaos. DDs only 10 months but I seem to have forgotten everything I ever knew about pregnancy

fennel tea good

x Aubergenie. I thought there was something about mint...

I'm only a few weeks so it should be OK. Mind you I'm still BF DD.

mint tea is fine. hope so as its pretty much all I drink! I think the one you have to avoid in later pregnancy is something to do with raspberry? that is the one that can bring on premature labour. Lets hope there is someone else on here that can clarify but I know its not mint that is the one to avoid.
I've also forgotten everything I ever knew about pregnancy and its my 4th! in my defence though, the older ones are 15 and 12 years old so memory has faded a bit!

from kellymom

Mint tea is sometimes used for gas and gas pains. Peppermint oil and tea can be dangerous if given directly to babies. Large amounts of peppermint or spearmint are known to decrease milk supply, and mint tea is traditionally used for decreasing milk supply - breastfeeding mothers should avoid drinking mint tea regularly or in large amounts.

fennel much better

DeJaVous · 29/09/2008 08:06

Thanks Ernest, DDs dropping feeds left right and center as it is. I'll try and get some fennel in. At least there's always ginger...

I drank loads of mint tea when pg, and ds seems fine.......

DeJaVous · 29/09/2008 10:21

But I shouldn't be drinking it because I'm BF as well as PG and it'll reduce milk production.
