Yep it's expensive...if you go for Midwife led privately through C&W it's around 3k cheaper, but I didn't qualify. I understand some of the expat health care packages cover maternity costs, but as far as I'm aware AXA, Bupa etc don't.

VBmum2b · 08/01/2008 14:06

Has anyone had direct experience with Gubby Ayida? I would appreciate your thoughts - as I am currently registered with her privately. Thanks.

I cannot recommend Guy Thorpe Beeston enough. I am a much older Mum and have just given birth to twins, two months early. He was absolutely first class during the ante natal care and at the birth. He is calm, reassuring and a true professional. Both my husband and I felt totally supported throughout my pregnancy. Nothing was too much trouble and he seems to work 24 hours. His secretary is also very helpful which made a big difference in arranging appointments etc.

Hi,
Can anyone recommend Mr Richard Sheridan at The Knutsford Suite Watford?

Thanks
Jo

I gave birth in June via c-section at Chelsea and Westminster under the care of Nick Wales. I have to say that I can't recommend him highly enough. I required a cervical stitch at 12 weeks and then I was carefully monitored up until my planned c-section at 38 weeks. Both my partner and I found Nick to be very friendly and professional. If I had any concerns or queries I could easily get hold of him (he even replied to an email I sent him on Christmas Day!). He was recommended to us via my gynecologist (one of the best in London). I would also like to add that his secretary was very helpful and polite and always went out of her way to try and accommodate my (often!) last minute appointment requests.

Hi, is there an option that going through my pregnancy by NHS- C&W but choose private consultant for the birth? If i have, has anyone one knows how much it would cost? Also if i want to have a caesarean, how it works at C&W? How much would it cost? Thanks a lot

sonamay · 14/10/2010 22:43

Hi lucky78
I was told "No" by C&W hospital( private wing) as wanted to do the same thing.

kitstwins · 15/10/2010 10:55

Lucky78 As sonamay says you can't switch from NHS antenatal to private delivery/birth. From my experience you pick a consultant and pay her/his fees (I think around £5k to £6.5k - they vary from consultant to consultant). On top of that you pay the hospital fees which come to around £5k for caesarean delivery (and one night's stay) or just over £4k for vaginal delivery. Anaethetist fees (epidural, etc.), bloodwork, scans are on top of this. Any extra nights you stay are I think around £850 per night. These amounts are ballpark as I don't have my info in front of me but you're looking at £10k to £12k for a private caesarean delivery by consultant.

The other option might be to opt for the midwife led package, which is cheaper than the consultant route. If you had a caesarean you wouldn't be able to chose your consultant - it would be with whichever one happened to be on duty at that time - so you'd 'lose out' on continuity of care and building up a relationship/rapport, which might or might not be important to you.

Might be worth calling the secretary on the private wing to discuss options - she's very helpful and explains the various breakdowns.

I've opted for consultant led private care due to a disastrous first time delivery (elsewhere) and so far so good. I'm hoping to avoid a c section this time but either way I feel in really safe hands. My consultant is Mark Johnson and I can't fault him so far.

Hope this helps.

lilly13 · 16/10/2010 17:35

I think it is best if you call one of consultant's secretaries. Consultants fees are around 6k + 1k extra for a c-section + hospital fees of around 5k. Consultant's package normally includes all your scans & appointments from week 20 onwards (I think these are worth having if you are paying all this money for private birth)...

I am due in May and know that Mark Johnson and Gubby Aiyda are fully booked already. I like Keith Duncan very much. He is very thorough and friendly... Also, Roger Marwood, Nick Wales and Zoe Penn came highly recommended. Guy Thorpe Beeston is supposed to be excellent, but he does only elective c-sections at C&W... I thought Makrina Savvidou was unprofessional, but these are personal impressions...

bee2005 · 22/11/2010 11:00

I had my first baby with Makrina (Mina) Savvidou and I cannot spek highly enough of her. She was fabulous and utterly brilliant. Very professional. I would strongly recommend her. I have booked with her for my second baby!!

Anu3 · 06/12/2010 14:39

Can anyone recommend Mr Richard Sheridan at The Knutsford Suite Watford please? The hospitals in the city are a bit far out for me as i live up in North London so have been looking at private care at the Knutsford Suite but have read a few articles in the BBC news about Dr Richard Sheridan when he had a court case against him in 2005. Im a bit apprehensive now and want some help!

aggeliki · 19/12/2010 22:00

Hi I also just had my first baby with Mina Savvidou and I could not agree with you more!
It has been a difficult time for me because I was so nervous but she was very friendly, available, professional and actually quite funny! I totally recommend her, she is an excellent professional

sh77 · 20/12/2010 11:56

Mina is doing my scans - I agree. She is v professional and reassuring. Plus, she trained/works with Prof Nicolaides, one the best experts in fetal medicine.

sammy42 · 28/12/2010 11:27

Mina Savvidou is excellent - I booked with her for my second baby (Martin Lupton first time). My pregnacy not quite so straightforward this time, but she was compassionate and and made me feel very at ease. Thorough and professional - would defintely recommend.

Interesting thread - net views on Keith Duncan vs Nick Wales? or best to combine both until very end?

KelsN · 15/09/2011 13:28

Nick & Keith work together so you choose one and if they are away when you are due you'll get the other. Both are lovely, I have had two children under Keith Duncan, one at the Portland and one at C&W (go for C&W as they have A&E, although they don't have the room service you get at Portland - pure bliss!) My sister in law is an obstetrician and I chose Keith based on her recommendations but Nick also came recommended. You're in safe hands either way!

mamma2000 · 16/04/2012 18:20

I had my baby with Keith Duncan as I had read great reviews about him, and he was one of the few available at the time. I have to say he is very good at his job, however I found him a bit impersonal and cold. As a first time mum I needed a bit more warmth and explanations to things. Being as expensive as it is I was expecting more care and attention, but I always felt rushed. I have no doubt in his credentials, but for my second baby I'll definitely chose someone else with a bit more compassion.

nancynan · 01/08/2021 12:08

@Gnome1973 sorry for highjacking your thead. But can I who you finally went with?

Also, I am wondering if anyone here had Charlotte Deans as their obstetrician? I can't seem to find too many reviews of her.

I know other consultants like Mark johnson, Roshini and Keith are the more popular, but I would assume they are also very difficult to catch hold of/just too busy.

I am looking for someone who is extremely supportive and easy to get in touch with. I will most probably be having an ELCS.

Thanks

Guy Thorpe-Beeston was amazing! Friendly; knowledgeable and down to earth. Really kind and caring.

Spearpeas · 06/04/2022 20:04

GTB did our early scans with us on the NHS. I was super excited when I learned that he had delivered Kate’s babies!
