Am about to wash all new clothes for baby using non bio, do I need to use fabric conditioner? I don't for myself, will it make any difference, am worried it might make baby itch? Or am I being neurotic??

Think you're meant to avoid using conditioner as should use as few chemicals as possible.

elmoandella · 28/09/2008 11:33

i only use it as it makes stuff smell nice and a bit softer. but you dont have to.

GodzillasBumcheek · 28/09/2008 11:36

Are you? Oh well a bit late now. Mind you we may have used the wrong washing liquid, and added conditioner, but we didn't put clean clothes on her every day (unless they were dirty of course). And didn't bath her every day.

She has never had any skin problems btw, aside from dry skin when she was born, which went away quite quickly.

you don't even need to use non bio if you don;t want to

just chuck them in with your own stuff

(and never use conditioner on towels or nappies as it wrekcs the absorbancy)

thanks, don't think will bother with it!!

I think the 'party-line' is not to use more chemicals than you have to. My sister, who has an ezcema-prone child and husband, never uses fabric conditioner on anything as it exacerbates their skin. But I have used Ecover fabric conditioner (and their washing liquid) for all our family's clothes, including those for new babies, without any problems ever. (We line-dry or use indoor clothes dryers and if I don't use a fabric conditioner the clothes are rougher and they feel a bit scratchy for a newborn. Tumble-drying might preserve the softness without using fabric conditioner?) I don't use conditioner for nappies, though, for the absorbancy reasons mentioned by MrsBadger.

I use soapnuts for all my laundry have done for yrs as dd has the most sensitive skin completely natural and you will not believe how soft your clothes come out think the website is inasoapnutshell but google soapnuts and youll find it

Always use conditioner (fairy) as water is really hard where we live and everything is like cardboard otherwise.
Used it from when DD was tiny.
