What were your best summer maternity clothes?

Cheering myself up on such a cold day looking at possible summer maternity clothes. As ds and dd were Jan and early May babies, I haven't really needed summer tents so far and was wondering what mothers of summer babies found to be the best buys for hot days. Not too much belly-showing stuff - I don't do neat bump pregnancies, think whale (but a whale who would like to look nice).

I've been wondering this as small one is due in September (DS came in November so I wasn't enormous in the summer with him).

Last year I had a pack of 3 t-shirts from next, v-neck and flared at the bottom - there was white, pale pink and cerise and they were brill. Otherwise I just wore wide leg baggy pants with sandals and t-shirt.

TBH, it's crap, crap, crap being v. pregnant in summer - sleeping last August at 8 months was a bloody nightmare - invest in a fan!!

I had a dress from Hennes last year that I just loved. It's navy with white spots, no sleeves. I am not normally a dress person but I found this one really easy to wear and it actually looked quite good.

Not a sales pitch.

The other great thing about it was that it was quite cheap - about £20 iirc.

I had a Benetton halter dress I quite liked but as I had ds in Feb I wasn't that pregnant then!

I am hoping for a cold summer .

Strappy vests and long stretchy shirts with flip flops served me pretty well. Ds was born June 2003 - bang in the middle of ridiculously hot summer - and I was never uncomfortable in that sort of clothing. No bump-flaunting for me either

Piccadillycircus - you know that just by getting preg, you have guaranteed a hot summer....

wide leg linen trousers and flipflops, I had some shorts but never wore them, didn't want to expose my cankles! vest tops, with quite wide straps to hide the lovely maternity bra straps. And I had a lovely white cotton shirt with short sleeves.

I was still too hot though

omigod I just realised that the sentence "not a sales pitch" in my message makes no sense at all!

Meant to go on to say that said dress, together a smart Jojomamanbebe linen trouser suit and some other bits and pieces, will shortly be on sale on mumsnet when I get around to posting!

I had an early september baby in a heatwave summer. Really enjoyed that I had two shortsleeved cotton mothercare dresses that came down to my ankles. Really comfy and covered up all the whale like bits and swollen ankles. I wore them with sandals and a short denim jacket. Can't believe they have survived in wearable condition for this pregnancy really.

I'm pg, due on 31 July, first summer baby too. Added complication, I am only 5'2" tall, so wide-legged trousers and long dresses are out (they make me look like a weeble!)

Any suggestions for what to wear gratefully received!

ha ha dinosaur - I thought maybe you worked for Hennes! I might be interested in the trouser suit - what size is it? I'm 5' 8" and hover around a size 14 when not preg.

Picadilly - due 1st August, but ds and dd both 9 days late, so maybe arrival will be a little later.

Miaou - lol at weeble. My dh who is a bit of a fashion guru suggested I get into the summer trend of a flouncy gypsy skirt over bump. I pointed out I would look like one of those circular side tables with chintz down to the floor.

Wilbur, I am a 12-14 when not pregnant. The trousers were definitely on the small side - I seem to recall that they didn't fit me any more after about 34-35 weeks (I got it for a wedding, and only wore it a couple of times afterwards). The jacket however was a pretty generous fit. However DS3 was a big baby (9lbs 6oz)so that probably explains it!

some large drawsting shorts - and loose fitting t-shirts brilliant for hanging around the house.

mothercare maternity dress - loved it along with a smocked yoke cotton shirt - white and three quarter trousers with dressy flipflops....

at home - whatever would help me keep cool - vet and sarong.....summer long and hot here in Australia. Had dd2 last November - dd2 was big babe and I had a huge belly... very uncomfortable.

oops that should read vest - perhaps I need to go to bed - getting latish and I am sooo tired....

Wilber, I am due 22nd September. DS was 11 days early so I am hoping that being like an elephant will not continue for too long.

Dungarees!! I live in them while pg, I can't bear anything on my waist. If it gets too hot, just chop the legs off.

I wore dungaree shorts with flip flops. I think being pg meant it was the only time I would get away with it and not end up looking like a Tweenie.
