Is it really necessary to go without underwire bras? And will I have done damage if I'm still wearing one at 21 weeks? A life without underwires seems unthinkable (sob)!

I used an underwired maternity bra by Anita... will look for a link for you. Much more supportive and won't cause any damage.

HeadFairy · 26/09/2008 12:57

something similar to this.I figured if it's ok during breastfeeding, it must be ok during pregnancy too.

plantsitter · 26/09/2008 12:59

Thanks Headfairy - that's not even hideously unattractive!

im was a 32g when preg and dependant on underwires but i found if you bought a good quality bra fitted by trained fitter it was supportive enough i had an emma jane nusing bras which were great. underwires arn't great becease your milk ducts go quite far back under your arm and the underwire can rest on a duct causing a blockage and threfore poss mastitus
hoping to help

curleyshirley · 26/09/2008 13:22

Plantsitter - I have the same isues and wore underwire throughout my last pregnancy, and now thorugh this one (I am 30 weeks now). Felt non-underwire simply wasnt an option if I wanted to feel remotely OK about myself and how I looked while pregnant! I then wore the Anita underwired nursing bras while breastfeeding. Never had a problem with mastitis for the 9 months that I breastfed. Myabe I was lucky, but I wouldnt worry too much if I were you.

JFly · 26/09/2008 13:34

Anita does underwire maternity and nursing bras up to a G cup which are great. Well worth the money.

GinaTonic · 26/09/2008 13:37

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! I was about to loose all hope.
HALLELUEYA THEY HAVE BLACK TOO!!! I didn't wear white underwear before I got preggo, so why on earth , now that I'm about to expose my norks to the general public on a regular basis, would I want to do it in a VIRGINAL WHITE BOULDER HOLDER!!!
Sorry , I just had to get that off my (considerable) chest!

JulesJules · 26/09/2008 13:38

TBH, I think the underwire thing is a bit of an old wives tale. FWIW I wore u/w bras throughout 2 pgs and 5 1/2 years of bf with absolutely no ill effects.

I would say, wear what you want and don't worry.

HeadFairy · 26/09/2008 13:39

Feeble I think the Anita ones have slightly shorter wire, or softer wire or something because although they offer more support than a non underwired one, they're not like normal underwired ones. I've just bought a whole load of new bras as I've just stopped bfing, and I have noticed the wiring is much more rigid and firmer.

plantsitter · 26/09/2008 13:42

Thanks for the reassurance people - and I will be investing in those bras straight away!

Ooooo no, what's wrong with wearing an underwired bra???

(mild panic sets in)

curleyshirley · 26/09/2008 14:06

Agree with Headfairy. I worse the Anitas while breastfeeding and they definitely did not give the support of 'normal' underwires. Could have been something to do the feeding flap thing (!) but still was such a difference when I got back into normal underwire when I stopped feeding. But still far better than no wire at all!!

EffiePerine · 26/09/2008 14:08

you can wear underwireds as long as they fit properly and are comfortable

JulesJules · 26/09/2008 14:09

Nothing wrong with wearing an underwired bra!!

And you can also eat brie and have the odd glass of wine!

Millie26 · 26/09/2008 14:17

phew

Can't possibly not wear an underwired bra, my boobs will drop to my knees and my partner will be very disappointed.

As long as they wont give me some horrible consequence when I breastfeed, I'll keep wearing them I think.

(Sorry to interrupt your thread guys...)

plantsitter · 26/09/2008 14:21

You weren't interrupting were you? Merely conversing. I'm with you anyway. At the moment I have ginormous but nice rotund boobs and I don't want to look flat chested with 2 malformed lumps on top of my huge belly, which is what'll happen if I don't wear an underwired bra!

OP posts:
Millie26 · 26/09/2008 14:30

hahahaha

Yes, I'm trying to maintain rotundness too - need every bit of help I can get!

Thanks plantsitter. xx

SlinkieM · 26/09/2008 15:10

I wore underwires throughout pg and feeding fine at 1 week without problems.
The Emma Jane nursing bras are great for feeding with big cup sizes and they do a maternity version (without drop cups) which I used to sleep in. You can get white and black and all sizes from figleaves.
The Anita doesn't go down to a 32 which is pretty annoying in my opinion!

HeadFairy · 26/09/2008 16:19

Maintaining rotundness = v important in my opinion, most bf and maternity bras give horrible mono boob effect.

feeble · 26/09/2008 19:46

I havent seen the maternity underwires. It is very poss they are a diff design. They didnt have them when I was preg. Just make sure they fit properly that is the most important. I wore underwires whilst bf without any ill effects but I know others who have diff stories.

jennylindinha · 26/09/2008 19:55

I'm 40 weeks pg tomorrow (yikes!) and have gone up to a 32GG during pregnancy. I have worn these bras all the time and they are really comfy but supportive as well so I can thoroughly recommend them. As long as the underwire goes quite far back under your arms and doesn't dig in then you'll be ok.

Have just bought some wire-free breastfeeding bras and oh dear... I'm not going to enjoy the lack of wire! Have also gone up to a J in one style, yet H in another . It just doesn't make sense! If you can get to a Bravissimo to be fitted then they are really helpful.

rainbowdays · 26/09/2008 22:05

jennylindinha - 32GG during preg! I was 32H before pregnancy!!!!!! I go up to a 34K when preg/breastfeeding.

I find the NCT comfort bras are my old reliables for during b-feeding. Currently feeding 6month old, but gone down to 34J.

jennylindinha · 26/09/2008 22:54

Ah well rainbow, GG seemed big to me after years of 32FF... The J was less of a shock in some ways, whatever fits and is comfy is all I'm bothered about now. I've just ordered an NCT comfort one ao good to hear that you find them reliable.

Mind you, I did treat myself to this bra as it was the only pretty nursing bra I could find. DP said he thought it was sexy (He may have a different opinion when it contains mahoosive bazoomas and milky breastpads...)

aeonchix · 27/09/2008 07:43

rainbowdays, i was exactly your size before pregnancy. please can you tell me how the NCT comfort bra size is compared to the royce bra?
i'm due in dec and now wear a 36K royce. the odd thing is that the bravissimo lady also said i could wear 34J kalyani.

i'm so confused.

rainbowdays · 28/09/2008 21:14

I found the royce bra cut me under the arms and gapped a bit at the top, not a good fit for me at all, but we are all different shapes and sizes so I am sure that some people the royce is a better choice! It is difficult to know in advance how much you will gain in the final weeks, all I can say is that you will need back extenders in the final weeks as your rib cage will expand when your boobs do not! I hope this helps?
