im planning for a waterbirth ! has anyone had 1 ? Any sugestions ?

I had one with 11lb baby and it was fab! If you are someone who always wants to sink into a hot bath if you feel under the weather then could be for you

However, as with just about every aspect of childbirth you don't know if it's right for you until you're there - some women finds it slows labour down or it just doesn't feel right - but then you can always get out.

Am rambling now - but basically my opinion is that it is great

Are you considering home or hospital?

I had one at home with my third, it was fantastic.

hired the pool 3 weeks before my due date it was wonderful having a hot tub to wollow in in the last few weeks

Gave birth in the water and I lifted dd2 out I watched her face break the water's surface and take her first breath was truly magical.

I had a wonderful waterbirth- best advice that I got was that if you find a warm bath relaxing (some people don't , I've no idea why!?), then its a good option.

Re: slowing labour- I think this happens when you get in too early, so worth having midwife etc confirm that you're more than 5cms dilated before hopping in.

I found it absolute bliss. Whatever you decide, best wishes for a wonderful birth!

It sounds ideal for me, but the only hospital I can find that offers one in Scotland is a 40-50 minute drive from me, and my local hospital doesn't offer one. Does anyone know if I'll be able to book myself in at the hospital I prefer? It's more of a birthing centre run by midwives, but it's next door to the hospital.

I would suggest you read lots of information on waterbirth so you know the pro's and con's.

Water births are the way to go.... really really helps with the pain of contractions, especially combined with gas and air ... and the baby is born very serenely.

I had one with my first and am hoping for another one this time. Be warned though - can't do it if you are strep b, induced or if the baby is in any distress. and don;t get in til your at least 5 cms or it will slow you down. Also remember to take off tens machine to avoid electrocution!! I had mine in leeds where they only have 2 rooms with a bath big enough ( Ithink...) so you take your chances. I wouldn't risk it at home though...

Be warned - if the baby is born under water its blue at first because its not taken in oxygen yet. This can be quite scary if you don't realise!

I had a home waterbirth with BabyDragon. It was wonderful but still f-ing painful! Did nothing to dull the pain for me but it was still nice than being like a beached whale on a bed

Had one with 3rd child - brilliant! In an midwive run childbrith unit. Ds was 9lb 10oz, but it was the easiest labour and birth of the three, and no stitches. He was born under water, but they don't breath until they actually hit air and it was lovely, so calm.

I had a home waterbirth and it was brilliant. All the things everyone else has said backed up by great midwives who were totally in control if and when I needed them to be. It did stop the contractions for a very short while, which was like a rest in a race, but then they came thick and fast. For me, I could move around without feeling uncomfortable or like a hippo.

I would wholeheartedly recommend it, it was amazing.
