Wife bleeding and in hospital - any advice...

Emma, my wife is currently in hospital for the 3rd time in 2 weeks because of bleeding. She is 37 weeks tomorrow (25th) and the doctors have mentioned inducing Emma. Can you give me information on being induced so I can pass it on to Emma? Emma has been a keen user of Mumsnet for 3 years and has asked me to post.

Scans have ruled out a low lying placenta and when Emma has an internal examination the doctors cannot see anything for the blood. Each time Emma has had bleeding there has been more blood than the previous time. She is still bleeding lightly now after 36 hours. The previous 2 bleeds were like her waters breaking she told me. Emma takes it easy and the bleeding has happened in the night or first thing in the morning. Emma also has a bit of a sore stomach and it feels tender to touch.

Emma is spending her second night in hospital tonight (her 4th altogether). The doctors have mentioned a corrosive ?something? I cant remember what the something was but I am sure you will know and I will feel silly when you remind me. They are not sure though. Our little boys head is not engaged yet and he is fine, great results on the monitor and great movement.

Any information on all the pros and cons of it all will be appreciated, we both live in the real world and like to be informed about what may happen.

Thanks in advance, Kevin.

Hi - just posting to say I was born at 37 weeks, my dd2 was born at just over 37 weeks and we're FINE.

Xena · 24/02/2005 20:04

Hi EmmasHusband I had bleeding throughout my 2nd pg. Mine was caused by abnormal cells which were there after the pg. But if they are in any doubt about abrution then they should be doing a c-section as it poses very real risk to mother and baby although a c-section is not without it disadvantages and risks it has it place as well. I hope this helps and as I know some of the others have already said keep questioning until your sure that you are 100% happy with the information you are being given. look after yourselfs and take care xxxx

toomanypushchairs · 24/02/2005 20:09

My sons were born at 37wks by c-section and we are all fine. I did lose alot of blood after, as Xena says c-sections are not without risk, but in theatre everything is on hand and they are well prepared. Hope all these posts aren't worrying you, but maybe if they've mentioned abruption again this evening you shouldn't wait till the morning. Your beautiful baby could be born by then if Emma goes into labour.

I just have to say to everyone that I would be at the hospital with her but there is football on...

Seriously, I am looking after our 2 year old. She has just gone to bed for the 2nd time tonight (crying has just stopped), she has me wrapped around her little finger. She is AMAZING though...

I was in and out of hospital in the last weeks of my second pregnancy due to bleeding. A casue was never established but partial abruption (I suppose a small tear?) was one of the possibilities. Anyway, the bleeding ceased at 36 or 37 weeks and I had a fantastic, quick labour at 41 weeks, the product of which is sound asleep in her Moses basket right now. I was assured bleeding, though not normal, was fairly common and not necessarily cause for alarm. BUT, insist and insist again on answers / action, go with your gut instincts.

EmmasHusband · 24/02/2005 20:34

Thanks Bunny2, we know we are having a boy, it is all very exciting as well as worrying...

Just a possibility. When I was a midwife (not for the past three years though) sometimes there would be something on the placenta called a "succinturate lobe". This is an extra lobe of placenta which leads by a blood vessal off the main placenta. This can sometimes seperate in later pregnancy and cause bleeding. Maybe they think this is what has happened hence the "partial abruption" comment. Not saying that this is the cause but it's just another thought. In any case it sounds as though neither of you have enough info from the hospital about what all this bleeding is about. Take a list of questions with you tomorrow.

I diddnt have any bleeding, but was induced on my first pregnancy due to pre eclampsia. It doesnt sound as if she will be induced but if she is I'm sure it will be fine. It was quite a long experience as DS was determined that he diddnt want to come out but i had my waters broken and then had a drip with hormones in, it wasnt what i would have chosen but in the end it wasn't too bad. I really hope whatever path your baby will be born it will be happy and you have been well informed of your choices and decisions. GOOD LUCK

sacha3taylor · 24/02/2005 20:54

PS- All this happedend at 37 weeks

alexsmum · 24/02/2005 21:07

i had a small bleed at 32 weeks and a bigger bleed at 36weeks which was like emma's sounds- like waters breaking at first and then later fresh red blood. went on for about 3 days intermittently. They said that sometimes a small bit of the placenta comes away but doesn't cause any harm. sounds like amanda's explanation. baby went to 40 weeks and was totally healthy after normal delivery.
just wanted to give you a positive story.

good luckxx

Hi there, it is my dh that has been posting, I am home from the hospital and have been reading all of your comments, thanks to everyone who replied.
I spoke to the consultant today who is thinks that the bleeding is not enough to be truly concerned about. He cannot say for sure the reason for the blood loss but says it is most likely to be a little bit of the placenta coming away. He seems to think it is unlikely that it is full placenta abruption.
I would only be induced if the bleeding got a lot stronger (it has now stopped), and he is happy for me to have a 'natural' vaginal birth in the circumstances ie without induction or c-secion as long as nothing changes.
I am now hoping that the onset of labour comes before my next bleed (if there is one), as am fed up of staying in hospital for a couple of nights and then leaving with no baby!!
Have said to dh that I will be drinking raspberry leaf tea and eating pineapple day and night to try and bring it on!! Thanks again for all your posts.

I thought I would update the thread with the latest news. Our son was born on the 27th of Feb, he 'popped' out at 5.25am and he and Emma are really great.

The doctors checked Emma?s placenta and confirmed a bit was missing and had separated probably when the bleeding started 3 weeks prior. Emma was kept in hospital for 24 hours just in case there was any extra bleeding on top of what was expected. Emma and Owen came home on Monday and it has been great since. Eve, our 2 year old is very happy to have a baby brother and everything Owen does makes Eve very excited. Fingers crossed this keeps going...

If we have another child Emma has to tell the doctor about the placenta problem. I am not sure how serious the problem was in the end but a couple of senior doctors seemed concerned a part of the placenta had come away. Thankfully Emma was not induced and delivered naturally.

Thanks for all your help and support. I can see why Emma spends so much time on here; it is an amazing resource.

Kev
