I don't know who to ask about this I have a question I would rather not ask my midwife! Is it safe to use a vibrator? (not internally) My SIL mentioned it wasn't safe to use a jacuzzi and this set me wondering but not knowing who I would ask.

Don't know about vibrator, but the reason for jacuzzis (I believe) is the very hot water.

I've always believed that a jacuzzi isn't safe because of the high temperature of the water - don't think this is a problem with a vibrator

mears · 14/02/2003 16:28

The problem with the jacuzzi is that the high water temperature can cause an increased temperature in the womb which can be detrimental to the baby. Don't know of any problems with vibrators - none spring to mind.

Well if sex is OK then I would have thought that the mechanical alternatives were also safe.

I used to have a vibrating cushion (for my back, honest guv) and the instructions very clearly state not to be used during pregnancy - although I don't know if that was just them being extra cautious to cover themselves. Haven't heard a good explanation why it would be a problem though. Was really annoyed at the time because my back got worse during pregnancy and I had thought it would be ideal!

Very impressed colette...lucky you. and I'm not trying to embarrass you further, just envious I think.

I was told and also read NOT to use a vibrator whilst pregnant- not internally, anyway, as it doesn't really mimic sex (unless you're married to Metal Mickey!) You can use it just to stimulate the clitoris, though.

my midwife suggested using an electric shaver to encourage ds to move (he was resolutely transverse) as babies don't like the buzzing sound & vibrations and try and move away from them - I'd imagine this would be the same with a vibrator used internally or externally, though obviously depends how far through the preganancy you are/how aware the child is....

No idea about safety aspect though - sorry
