Spotting at 5 weeks

I'm feeling miserable - had a positive preg test last week, also loads of nausea and fatigue.
The nausea stopped yesterday and I was still awake at 10pm last night, then this morning I spotted with a little blood.
Have been having stomach pains since the day before I did the test and hsve kept chanting 'it's just ligaments' to myself, but I think I have to accept that this little person is probably not going to stick around.
Can't see any point in going to GP, as it is so very early and couldn't be seen on scan so am sitting cuddling sleeping ds and feeling grateful for him.

Bluebear - sorry you are feeling down and I can understand why you feel as you do but spotting does not necessarily mean impending miscarriage - have a look a Katherine's Pregnant after a miscarriage thread to see how many Mumsnetters have spotted and gone on to have a successful pregnancy - try and relax and get as much rest as you can - may be worth ringing your local midwife for their opinion. Good luck.

it's the sudden - no nausea, no tiredness, which is making me think the worst.
Thanks for replying, I haven't told anyone in 'real life' about the pg yet (except my boss because I work with chemicals that can cause fetal abnormality so I had to change my job a little.)

Bluebear its really hard early in pg isn't it. You want to be realsitic but at the same time you want to be positive and sometimes the two just seem to clash. It is impossible to say what is happening to you at the moment. Its a horrible thing but only time will tell. Don't panic too much about your symptoms going though - mine have come and gone all the time with all my pg, both good and bad. 5 weeks is very early to have the full blown symptoms so it may just be day to day varation.

Small comfort when you don't know what to beleive but I am now 14 weeks pg. I became pg immediatly following a mc and started spotting on the day my period was due. Never even occurred to me I was pg until 7 weeks when I started feeling sick. I'd been spotting all the time so eventually at 9 weeks I had a scan to confirm the loss - and there was a baby wriggling round. I continued to spot until 12 weeks. It was so harrowing. Before this I would have said that spotting was the end but now I know it is not always the case. So don't give up. I really hope it stops for you and you can hang on until 7 weeks when they can do a scan at an EPU. All my love.

Hi bluebear, I'm now 8 weeks and 4 days and from about 5 weeks I had spotting, mostly yukky dark discharge (sorry I know thats gross) but I also had abit of fresh blood. Anyway I went to the hospital and they scanned me at 5 weeks + 3 days but saw nothing as I was so early they asked me to come back in 2 weeks, which was last week, and then we all saw a tiny baby with a beating heart and something called a plantation bleed.
Basically it's a separate collection of fluid away from the baby which is causing the spotting. They said it's quite normal and nothing to worry about and that it could carry on for some time or stop and start or just stop all together, which at the moment it has. If I were you I would go to the GP just to put your mind at rest or if you've got The early pregnancy assessment unit at your hospital, after all that's what they are there for.
Try not to worry to much and rest for a while, not easy with little one already but you know what I mean. Good Luck.

The same thing happened to me, I ended up spotting, with some quite heavey bleeds, till 14 weeks. I found ringing the NHS Direct for reassurance helped.

Thanks Katherine - I've read your thread, and your words mean a lot to me.
You've hit the nail on the head about getting to 7 weeks, I know that that's the earliest the heartbeat can be picked up so I guess I better try to cheer up and look on the bright side until then.

Thanks EmmaTMG and Slug - I had a computer glitch and missed your posts.
I have a GP appointment booked for next week (to choose the hospital for the birth etc. ) so I think I'll wait till then and mention it (unless something more definite happens beforehand).
I had a 7 week scan with ds because of my chemical exposure so I guess I'll have one this time anyway.
Thanks again to everyone who's posted.
