1st baby- what do we really need?

Can anyone recommend a website that will give me a list of what we REALLY need to buy for our new baby vs the expensive items that seem like a good idea but never get used....

Or are there items you bought and never really used?

Im not due til March but keen to work out how much we need to spend!

Definitely muslins - can't have too many.

Bouncy chair - I found it invaluable. Could eat dinner whilst bouncing with foot!

I am one of the ones that would disagree with MMS on baby baths. Just use normal bath and get a support chair/cradle thing if that make you more comfortable using the big bath. I found it difficult to bend over the bath at first as had a c-section. I bathed DD in a washing up bowl on the kitchen worktop for the first couple of weeks.

just have baby in bath wityh you, much easier

I would borrow stuff like bouncy chair etc if you can. ds1 loved his but ds2 would not stayt in it. he loathed the thing.
so would have been a waste of money for us

and I disagree about muslins - though that seems somewhat heretic around here. I never used them with DD. I had a bunch of clean tea towels for winding her. Never used lansinoh either.

You could look round the shops at everything to get a feel for the best places to buy stuff, and then send someone else out to buy things as you discover you need them. That way you only get the stuff you really need. You don't need much at first and you will probably get given loads as presents anyway.

I found a change table really useful, got one from local freecycle for baby no2, didn't bother with baby no 1 and had constant back ache,

Its nct nearly new sale time-great for bargains. I got our bouncy chair for £5.There are loads all over the country.

Don't buy too many clothes as you will get loads as gifts. That and soft toys.

About 12 sleepsuits (white are good. You can boilwash them if necessary

12 vests (for a winter baby)

Nappies (cloth if you are looking to save money) and a bucket to soak them in.

A couple of pairs of scratch mittens or socks to put on babies hands in the first few weeks. Their nails are sharp and can be quite long.

Flannels and a small bowl to clean babys bott

A carseat (if you intend to transport baby by car)

2 or 3 baby blankets (you can use them in the crib and to swaddle baby in the early days avoiding the need for cardigans.)

You don't need to spend much on anything, except on a carseat where you really need a new one.

Join Freecycle, and you'll see people giving away just about everything you could need in terms of pushchairs, baby clothes, bouncy chairs etc.

On Mumsnet For Sale, you can get cloth nappys second hand (much cheaper, and remember that you can sell them when you are finished with them), and second hand slings - or check out the Yahoo groups for nappies and slings for other second hand bargains. Pushchairs are tricky territory as many people seem to regret their first choice. They also depreciate massively, so again, check out the For Sale on here

You only need:

A few, white, babygros
A few, white, vests
Some muslins or other general purpose mopping cloths
A couple of blankets
A couple of Grobags
A cot/crib
Nappies and wraps
Washable wipes/cheap flannels
Sling/pushchair/pram

Anything else that you find you need, you can go out and buy later
