Eye patches from long-haul flights and ear plugs in case you end up having to stay on a ward for a night or two. Otherwise lots of other new mums + new babies + visits from midwives all night = no sleep for you.

Arnica tablets are a must, and make sure you have some fibre packed nibbles left over from labour to gorge on straight after the birth as you will be starving, hospital food is poisonous and you want to keep things moving...

Lotster · 02/10/2008 14:37

I must say arnica IS a must!

I really really recomend Lansinoh breast pads, they're so comfy, thin and have a large coverage area.

Also hated maternity pads. Remember my sister looking at me with an "is that you?" face as we walked down the hallway and my pad was rustling loudly!!! Swiftly changed to and loved, Always Ulta nighttime pads - dark blue pack. Thin, wings, so secure and comfy.

Husband shoved bananas as cereal bars in my gob in between every contraction too bless him, so they're good.

Also a 6 pack of mini Evian's or other, with some straws in case you want them fed to you.

Top tip from my best mate is to have a bottle of water in the fridge and one in the freezer to take with you, so that once you've finished the cold one from the fridge you still have another chilled one - lukewarm water not good if you've been labouring for hours!

I have a big note pinned on my bag reminding me to take them as I am sure I will be flapping like an idiot when it's actually time to go to the hospital!!

broodymom · 02/10/2008 21:17

Hi another tip! or depressing thought a few times when i went to ante-natal appointments if i had high blood pressure i would be admitted to hosp then and there, so an overnight bag ready just incase this happens is handy! Saves dp turning up with the wrong stuff lol!

Ps the only things in my labour bag i used when i was in labour was a wet flannel, some dextrose chews, bottles of water, nightie and socks!

After the birth breast pads, and sanitary pads are ESSENTIAL! as well as pants. I also wore dark bottoms and tops because of the blood loss and leaking milk after the birth. Actually could go on and on.lol

Agree with the Hedgewitch.

also remember the time of year - for those of us due this month/next month it's gonna be boiling in the hospital, but freezing when you go outside - so remember a big cardie or coat for yourself for those times when you will just have to step outside for some fresh air (obviously don't have to pack in your bag - just note to self to throw in the car). Also coat type thing and blankets for taking babba home.
