Are any of you "blooming" ladies taking Omeprazole?

I was diagnosed with acid reflux last year and have been taking Omeprazole ever since. It says on the leaflet to talk to your Dr before taking this medicine if pregnant.
So I stopped taking it when TTC. Luckily I fell pregnant the 1st month & am now 7+1.
I am suffering from heartburn quite badly and went to Drs for some Gaviscon. She told me off for stopping the Omeprazole and said it does no harm to the baby.
I've been looking on some American websites & they say not to take it as it can damage the unborn baby.
What do I do? Being so early on, I don't want to take anything I shouldn't.
Is it a case of Britain being behind in medicine or America being to picky?
Are any of you on it? If not, would you take it?
Thanks

I'm sorry to bump this again but I was doing some reading on this, specifically why the UK recommendations differ from the UK.

brettgirl2 above stated that tests were done by giving "a load of pregnant rats 40x the standard dose.". However, my research, specifically this link: www.medscape.com/viewarticle/515100_5 (and a UK NHS link that mentions the same article but it opens as a word doc so I can't link it) states that the 40x standard dose was given in the case of Lansoprazole, not omeprazole.

In that same article, Omeprazole "is classified as a class C drug in pregnancy because at doses similar to those used in humans, omeprazole produced dose-related embryonic and fetal mortality in pregnant rats and rabbits." which, understandably terrifies me.

As someone with GERD, ranitidine is fricken' useless. It's classed as Class B, even though apparently (I haven't found this information definitively yet) the company who created it states it's not for use in pregnancy. I'm still on ranitidine though, and as much as I'd like to return to Omeprazole I'm going to wait until I'm out of the first trimester (at the very least) but also look at an alternative for the 2nd and 3rd one simply because the article above is too terrifying to me to risk it.

I am on omeprazole for HG and it has helped me lead a relatively normal life, instead of frequent visits to hospital for an IV. I did some research before I started taking it, and the rabbit study did worry me. However, there have been several medium sized studies in humans comparing pregnancy outcomes for people in omeprazole versus controls, and there doesn't seem to be any increased risk or miscarriage or abnormalities. It's not as well studied as it could be, but if you can't manage without it, I think the evidence is reassuring that it doesn't cause major harm,
