After 5 years of trying I'm now about 7 weeks (I think) pregnant. Test positive but told Dr won't see me until 12 weeks. I know nothing about being pregnant or bringing up a baby and am scared I'll do something wrong. Can anyone give me any advice? Apart from my partner I haven't told anyone as we are worried something might go wrong. Am very, very excited and very relieved to have found this website.

Congratulations! I was 41 when I had my daughter and my husband was 54. I do hope you have a healthy pregnancy and a lovely baby at the end of it.

My pregnancy was straightforward and the only difference my age made was that I was kept a closer eye on than younger mothers. I'd echo the advice on diet - in particular, eat lots of green veg and oily fish and avoid anything with raw egg in it (including mayonnaise, mousse etc). You will get a useful book on pregnancy from the NHS, (eventually) but the first 12 weeks are the most crucial from the point of view of the baby's development (it's basically just growing from then onwards), so look after both of you and get plenty of rest.

congratulations sandyr, hope your pregnancy progresses smoothly. Would second whoever it was that recommended the rough guide to pregnancy.... puts a humorous spin on the whole minefield of pregnancy (oooh, what a steep learning curve you are about the embark on!). Contains all the facts, made me laugh out loud as I read it, which stopped me from feeling TOO overwhelmed by it all...

Good luck, look after yourself, and see you on various threads!

Thanks for all the advice and reassurance. Sickness starting at 6-7 weeks? Oh, no. I'd convinced myself I was going to have a sickness free, "I am a glowing mother to be" type of pregnancy !! I can't stop looking at my stomach in the mirror wondering what's in there, whether its getting bigger (or showing at all) is that normal?!!!

Twiglett - thanks for checking I found the antenatal club.

SandyR, this time last year I was exactly in your position. MN will have all the answers! I didn't even need to buy a pregnancy book.

Good luck!

Congratulations Sandy (and Welcome)

When I was PG for the first time I spent every waking moment thinking about what was going on inside my belly and any opportuntity I had to look side ways in a mirror I took......even at work!!! i was concinced I'd have a bump, or at least something by 7-8 weeks so what you describe sounds very normal to me.

However I still had people saying "blimey were's your bump then?" when I was nearly 20 weeks so I'm probably not a good example

COngratulations again

Hi Sandy! Firstly, congratulations! What wonderful news after so long trying - you must be thrilled (and terrified, and knackered and worried and overjoyed and disbelieving )

Secondly, welcome to Mumsnet. Stick with us - this site is the best and I only wish I had found it when I was pg. Don't be afraid to ask any question, not matter how stupid it might seem. And enjoy your pregnancy!

purpleturtle · 15/02/2005 19:13

Congratulations SandyR! How exciting!

You might be relieved to have found this website today, but by Thursday you'll be hooked. Ask any of us. I'm currently ignoring 2 shouting toddlers who should be going to sleep, because this is so much more fun.

Advice: RELAX, ENJOY

Hope to see you around here a bit

yeah well done SandyR! try not to watch too much discovery health! although if you can catch any re runs of 'The Baby Whisperer' they're well worth it (Tracy Hogg's her name, the books are great, although she's sadly recently passed on)
Congrats and enjoy!

SandyR · 16/02/2005 08:20

Totally right about being addicted to this site. First thing I did this morning was logo on.
Thanks for the advice re. the nuchal test, rang the dr's yesterday and mentioned it and from "we don't want to see u until you make it to 12 weeks" (charming!), I now have an appt for next week to see a Dr. Still don't feel sick or tired, although i'm sure I'll eat my words soon enough and join you all in the ms challenge. Re. the nuchal test, do they always give you a definite result or is it a "the chances are..." type of thing?

Totaly agree with frizbe discovery health !

NotQuiteCockney · 16/02/2005 08:27

Nuchal fold tests aren't definitive - they give you a probability. But they generally say, the default risk for your age is 1 in X, your risk is now 1 in Y. Only an amnio or CVS can give guaranteed results, but there is a risk of problems with these procedures, so they're not worth doing without good cause.

If that risk is too high, then you can consider CVS/amnio/a private scan. It's worth thinking about what you would do about a bad result, unpleasant though such thoughts are.

Some centres do a combined nuchal fold and blood test, which is meant to give more accurate results.

lilsmum · 16/02/2005 08:35

are you taking folic acid? dont know if anyone else has mentioned this on here, you should take folic acid from as soon as you find you are pregnant to 12 weeks, i also took pregnancy vitamins throughout because my diet has never really been healthy

Congratulations Sandy. Don't worry about comparing symptoms too much because everyone has a different pregnancy. For me although I had some nausea I was only sick once with each pregnancy. But the tiredness kicked in and was overwhelming at about 8 weeks. With DS (my first) I used to go to bed as soon as I got home from work, then get up have something to eat and go back to bed! With DD I couldn't because of DS but I would have a bath with him at 7 pm and then go to bed at the same time some nights. But don't think my sister or SIL suffered with the tiredness to this extent. But at 6 weeks we went to Tenerife with my PILs, I invented a water infection requiring antibiotics (to explain lack of drinking) and they were none the wiser because I was fine.
