How long AFTER the birth were you wearing maternity clothes?

How long after your baby's birth did you carry on wearing maternity clothes for? I'm 31 weeks pregnant and feel like I've got nothing to wear. I can't decide whether to treat myself to a couple of nice new things or whether just to muddle through now that I've got this far.

Get a few nice things because in the last few weeks you will probably expand!
I wore some of my things for 2-3 months afterwards. They were so nice and lose and comfy round the house.

About a month after the birth I started to fit back into my normal clothes but loved to wear my mat clothes round the house. When you're dealing with a colicky newborn the last thing you think about is how you look, only about how comfy you are and how the clothes you're wearing will act as PJs when you can catch a quick nap. So treat yourself!

about 2 or 3 weeks. Probably should have worn them longer rather than squeeze myself into other (uncomfortable) clothes but hated my maternity clothes and was desperate to start feeling more like 'me' again.

buy some non-maternity things that will adapt. Stretchy things, long tops etc. i stopped buying special maternity stuff quite early on in my pregnancy and got by on charity shop finds. Some of them were great and I'm still wearing them 4 years later. Should be loads of stuff in the shops at the moment that will do, smocky sundresses, slouchy trousers, long t-shirts etc. I wouldn't buy any maternity stuff at this stage unless they are in the sale or something - you do need loose clothes after birth but your body isn't necessarily maternity-shaped iyswim, more untoned!

BeachBunni · 29/07/2008 20:35

Agree with harpomarx - most of my mat stuff tbh was larger sized smocked tops etc that i'm still wearing 9 months after

2 days (smug bugger expression). Mind you my jeans don't fit yet

I wore my maternity trousers for quite a while after DD was born - 4 or 5 months probably. Although the tops never saw the light of day after she was born. You do change shape quite dramatically after the birth and although your waistline will take a while to recover apart from a larger bust if you are breastfeeding your top half will not be pregnant shaped anymore. The maternity trousers I carried on wearing were the ones with just an elasticated waist that you can draw in rather than a big overbump section and they were great while I got back into shape and saved me buying bigger sizes in things. I was back in my jeans by about 3 months after DD was born and in all of my clothes by about 8 months after the birth which was fab considering I'd put on a lot of weight and I'm sure not buying bigger sizes helped me lose the weight as I was desperate to get back into normal clothes.

EffiePerine · 29/07/2008 20:42

wore the larger stuff I got for the in-between stage instead

hated all my maternity clothes and wanted to bin them

this is why you should avoid going straight into maternity weara t 4 months or whatever

i didn't wear them after both my babies were born - i bought joggers and larger jeans for the few weeks after. I'm desperate to get back into my clothes - but breastfeeding has meant my boobs have gone from a B cup to a DD cup - they are HUGE!!! some of my tops fit me, but I have to lose 2stone to get back to where i want to be - DS2 is 12weeks now - i really ought to be doing something to lose the weight

BeachBunni · 29/07/2008 21:58

Cos you're just wanting to boast about how big your boobs have got - lol- Ignore me, mine shrunk from a B to a AA after bf

fledtoscotland · 29/07/2008 23:08

i wore my maternity clothes for about 2-3months and went back into my pre-pregnancy jeans ... only to find out i was pregnant again!

ChasingSquirrels · 29/07/2008 23:12

ds1 - I didn't, had some loose elastic waist trousers, but only for a week.
ds2 - about 10 days, due to thighs though not waist - was really suprised by that.

MsHighwater · 29/07/2008 23:15

I was immensely proud of having got into my pre-pregnancy jeans 2 weeks after dd was born.

But then, they were stretchy and not desperately tight in the first place so less to boast about than I might wish for. .

I only had a small number of actual maternity tops, most of which got ditched more or less straight away.
